Badly water damaged photo to fix up if anybody can ............. please
« on: Friday 10 November 06 13:30 GMT (UK) »
Help please!

I have a photo that I would like to post on this board, have scanned it at 300 dpi but is 2.95 mb (1520 x 2288 pixels).  It's a large photo with a lot of damage so I wanted to try and keep it as accurate as possible hence the 300 dpi as I often see posts requesting people to scan at this level

Now what do I do ???

Casalguidi :)

Hi Casa

Have you got Irfanview or another image program?

Irfanview is free to download and you can easily resize the photo, using either the number of pixels, the file size, the dimensions or as a percentage of the whole.  I usually resize to about 60%, keeping the ratio the same, so that it doesn't come out tall & thin!

Open file

Image - resize/ resample

Choose one from the options below:

a) Set new size

b) pixels/ cm/ inches

c) As a percentage of original

Preserve aspect ratio (tick)

I will look up where to find Irfanview if that helps?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots

No, I don't have infranview but I do have an image program so can easily reduce the pixel size.  Will that not reduce the clarity though - I'm not "up" on these things ???

Hi there, to make pictures smaller this is what you do. First bring up picture, and then right click on it. It comes up with a list of things you can click on. They are as follows.

Preview
Edit
Print
Refresh thumbnail
Now click on edit. It now opens a new window for you. Paint shop I think it’s called.
On the top line it has a list of things you can do. From left to right they are.
File,   Edit,   View,   Image,   Colors,    Help

Click on Image, which will give you a drop down menu of
Flip/rotate
Stretch/skew
Invert/colors
Attributes
Clean image
Draw opaque

Now click onstretch/skew. You will see a box with
Horizontal on it ,it will have a number 100 in it click on it and make it 50.
Just below this there is a box with vertical on it and a number 100 on it click on it and make it 50.
Then click, OK button. This will shut that bit and reopen paint window. Now click on close of paint shop. It will ask you if you want to . change, click yes ok.

This should have now made your picture 50% smaller , so should be able to send it ,if it is still to big do all this again ok and it will come out 50% smaller again .  ok I think you will get the hang of it now .You know if you have made it small enough because it will go on page. After you get the hang of it, play about with the numbers you change it by then so you can get as big a picture as possible. Ok

Right last few things now. First of all, print this out so you can read this as you go a long ok. Second and last, just before you save picture, change original pictures file name. so you have one new picture and one original size . good luck and let me know how you get on. migky

Isnt it now 25% of the original size - I'm no expert, but reducing a square by 50% each side results in an area only 25% of the size originally - unless its all to do with pixels, which loses me  ;)
