Canon Lewis - Resolfen completed thanks
« on: Sunday 12 November 06 17:11 GMT (UK) »
Are there any rootschatters out there from Resolfen, Neath? I have an ancestor - Canon Arthur Thomas Lewis - who was Vicar at Resolven in the 1960's. I have just discovered that they have named the church hall in his honour and wondered if anyone remembers him or can fill in any details such as when he died or where he is buried. I have contacted the present Vicar but he can't help. The next step is the Diocesan Office. In the meantime, if anyone can help I would be very grateful. Cheers!

In the 1960s Crockfords, the directory of clergy, would have included information about all ordained Anglican clergy so you could try there (in the last ten years it has only had a much more limited list).  Not sure if you can get to a library which would have it.

Its VERY unlikely that a diocesan office would have this information nor would the bishop's office as they do not keep that stuff.  Its just possible if someone can get hold of the Diocesan directory that there might be an obit but it would mean working through it. In Exeter I know there is a run of that diocese's diocesan directories in the Cathedral Library and you would probably find Crockfords there too

It may be that the Church Commissioners (1 Millbank, London SW1P 3JZ) might be able to help (through their pensions board perhaps) but with the constraints of data protection I think its a bit of a lost leader.

Do you know which Cathedral he was a Canon of - as again that might give you some information - things like an obit in the Cathedral news (or Friends newsletter) but quite a lot of work for someone.

Thanks for your reply. I have all of the info from Crockfords, it was more personal stuff I was after. Apparently he was quite a character and well known in his parish. I think I have found a marriage for him in the indexes but it is not yet confirmed. I have yet to find his death record/obituary. Thanks for the information about the Diocesan office, perhaps I need to contact Llandaff Cathedral.

A further thought - you could find out if there is a Diocesan newsletter (not all dioceses have one) and get a small ad in - 1960 in clergy terms is not that long ago.  I was nattering today to a cleric who is retired but has a memory back to the fifties and if your forbear was a character he might well be remembered through that route.

There is a blog site on Resolven
http://eclecs.blogspot.com
Don't know if that helps but members of the Resolven History Society would certainly have been around when your Reverened was in Resolven.

Thanks for the offer Kayleigh. Looking for anything on his marriage and children. Also I don' know if he was buried in Resolfen or Llangennech so if you are ever wandering the churchyard.... :)
