What is Bulte?
« on: Sunday 14 November 04 08:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi!
I found this in the 1851 census:

BULLOCK Samuel 61 AA Gls Bulte ?

Now I wonder: what is Bulte?

Markus
Gloucestershire - Preston, Bullock, Scuse, Owen, Howell, Burton, Preen

Wiltshire - Scuse/Skuse

Herefordshire - Austin

Northamptonshire - Burton

Staffordshire - Burton

Could it be a Butler ?

The nearest sounding placename I could find in Gloucestershire (GLS) is Bulley

I think one would need to see the image of that page to get this. I think it is a poor transcription. The first part is possibly Gloucestershire.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

From the position of the word Blute I would say that it's Samuel's birth place.

As Hack says a possibly a poor transcription -

Maybe Bulley?

There's also Bullo, just south of Newnham.
