William Ogden's first wife
« on: Wednesday 15 November 06 22:58 GMT (UK) »
My great-great grandfather William Ogden was born around 1804 in Carrickfergus. He served in the 17th Lancers between Feb 12 1819 and 12 May 1846, and married my great-great grandmother Mary Ann Flint in England in 1853. But William had another wife. He describes himself as 'married' in his army Attestation document on April 2 1832, and on his marriage certificate to Mary Ann he's a widower.

The name Ogden is an unusual one in Ireland...most Ogdens come from Lancashire. I wonder if anyone has come across the first Mrs Ogden, or knows where I might look?

In period of Griffiths Valuation (1848 - 1864), there were apparently, according to a couple of sources, only 2 Ogden households. One in Dublin, the other in Dublin City. That said, an IGI search of the surname Ogden (and variants), would suggest there were quite a few more folks about.

That's true but they're mostly too early or too late!
