Alexander Baillie emigration
« on: Friday 17 November 06 18:26 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather, Alexander Baillie, emigrated to the USA from Scotland in about 1893 or 1894.  Assuming the family came to the USA together, other family members would have included wife Helen Kelly Baillie, son John Baillie (my grandfather), son Robert, son James, daughter Mary, daughter Elizabeth and daughter margaret.

At the time of the emigration, Alexander would have been about 38 years old.
Can anyone find a record of the family emigration?

Thank you
Bob

Yes, you found them!   This is the right family.  The Mary Kelly, age 60, was the mother of Helen Kelly Baillie, Alexander's wife.  They did reside in Closter NJ.

Missing on this manifest is the husband, Alexander Baillie, and my grandfather and son of Alexander, John A Baillie.

Is it possible that they emigrated earlier, maybe in 1893

Thank you very much for this information.  This is very helpful in my quest to discover my ancestry and how and when they came to the USA.  Much appreciated

Hi Bob,

Glad I could help!  And a belated WELCOME TO ROOTSCHAT - should have said that earlier  ;D

If you send me a personal message (click on the green scroll under my avatar at left) and tell me your email address I can send you a copy of the image of the ships list that has your ancestors' names.  (Don't post your email address directly on the board - it will be removed by the moderators to prevent junk emails).

I'll have another look for Alexander and son, but I didn't see Alexander the first time, which was why I tried looking for Helen instead.  Can you tell me the year of birth of John A?  He might be easier to spot if I knew his age.  Also, you said in your original post that there was a daughter named Mary - she would also seem to be missing from this group?  If you could let me know her year of birth as well, that might help.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the PM.  This looks like a really good possibility for John, although it would be a bit of a stretch for his age.   Are you sure about the 1878 birth date?

Arriving at New York on 22 May 1893 aboard the City of Rome (coincidence?)
Jno. A. Baillie, age 20, Engineer, Citizen of Great Britain, Native of Scotland, Last residence - really hard to read - looks like Eloiline?? (clearly not Edinburgh though), destination Pittsburg, extended sojourn, 2nd Cabin, embarked at Greenock.

Seems to be travelling alone...

What do you think?

Thank you.

On the birthdate, yes, I am pretty sure.  I have a copy of John A Baillie's World War 1 draft registration that shows the 1878 birth date as well as similar dates from multiple genealogy sites.    The Pittsburgh-bound John Baillie appears to be a different person.

My hunch is that they still emigrated earlier than the other members of the family (unless for some reason, they were not listed on the May 21,1894 ship manifest).

I appreciate your continued efforts to find John and Alexander.  Regards.
