1841/51 Mist
« on: Friday 17 November 06 19:11 GMT (UK) »
Please can someone lookup 1851 or 1841 census for John Thomas Mist. He was born about 1836 in Godshill Hampshire. He was married to a Maria ??. In 1881 he was a farmer of 2 acres. Interested in his family before marriage.
Thank you
Pam

Hi,

There is this family,

1841  HO107/397/14  f.5  p.15  Fordingbridge
Godshill Wood
//
John MIST     40    Ag Lab
Louisa           40
Ambrose         9
Louisa            7
John               5
Esther            3
Ellen               7mon
/
Ambrose ANGEL        10
Elizabeth WOODWARD  9
George MERCHANT     15
Mary ANGELL            70                       All born in County
//

1851  HO107/1667  f.644  p.14  Godshill

John MIST           Head  M  51  Ag Lab                           Hants Fordingbridge
Louisa                Wife   M  52    "    "  wife                        "  "        "  "
Ambrose              Son   U  19    "    "                               "  "    Godshill
Mary                  Daur   U  17   "    "  daur                        "  "    Godshill
Thomas              Son    U  15   "    "  son                         "  "    Godshill
Hester                Daur   U   12   "    "  daur                       "  "    Godshill
Hellen                 Daur   U  10   Scholar                             "  "    Godshill
Mary ANGELL  mother    W  80  Retired Weaver Paupery?        "  "  Hungerford
                    -in-law

I think in 1851 Mary may be Louisa Mary, and Thomas is probably John Thomas, he uses the name Thomas in the 1861 and 1871 census, let me know if you need those details.

There is a possible double wedding of John Thomas and his sister Hellen,

John Thomas MIST  Mar Q  1858  Alderbury Wiltshire  v.5a  p.241

other names on page,

Maria MARLOW
Helen MIST
George SMITH

In 1861 I can see a George SMITH in Fordingbridge, with a wife Helen who is age 21 b.Godshill  :)

Regards
Daisy

Hi Daisy,
Great info.  thank you, I don't have 1861 or 71 and would like it if you can.  You are right about John being called Thomas on some of the census. Didn't know about the double marriage though! My ma-in-law( who was a Mist) will be thrilled.
Thanks again
Pam

In 1861 they are transcribed as MIAL but the image looks like MIST, I'm really struggling to make out the address and Thomas's birthplace, hopefully someone else will take a look and have more luck  :)

Hi again Daisy, :D
Many thanks, I can complete the jigsaw as they say!. Could the address that is hard to read be Godshill Purlieu? that is the address on the 1881 census. Any way I now have lots of info. to sort out which hopefully will keep me sweet with the ma-in-law!!! ;D
Good luck with your own hunting.
Pam ;)

Hi Pam,

I've had another look at the 1861, I don't think it says Godshill Purlieu, but it does say "Hamlet of Blissford", sorry I missed that before  :-[

I think more local knowledge may be needed to work out the address.
