Is this a silly question?
« on: Sunday 14 November 04 15:04 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if you can find who lived at a certain address apart from the census information? This might sound a bit silly, but I have hit a brick wall with my Grandfather. I can't find him in the 1881,1891 or the 1901 census. But I have an address for him on his marriage certificate.
He was born in Ireland, but I do not know when he arrived in the UK. So if I can't find him on any of the census's I thought the address would be the next best thing, then again it does sound too easy.
Regards
Maria :-[

Best thing would be for you to post on this site what information you do have and one (or more!) of us will flood you with advice and suggestions!

I agree with Grey Squirrel.
Can you post what he did for a living and when he was married? That info should be on the marriage cert and will be  a huge help. Did he have any other family members who came over from Ireland or was he alone?

Hi Maria

Not a silly question at all - hopefully this isn't a silly answer!  ;D

You may wish to post something on the Durham Board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=12.0 or more specifically the lookup requests Board for Durham http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=217.0 as someone may be able to look up the electoral registers for Durham, which I believe are available at Newcastle Library.  I know that's not too handy for you, but there's bound to be a RootsChatter who lives near to Newcastle library.

Good luck  :)

Alternative suggestion is Northumberland and Durham FHS, where there may be somebody willing to do a lookup for you in return for a lookup that is local to you.
E Yorks - Carver, Steels, Cross, Maltby, Whiting, Moor, Laybourn
W Yorks - Wilkinson, Kershaw, Rawnsley, Shaw
Norfolk - Carver, Dowson
Cheshire - Berry, Cooper
Lincs - Berry
London/Ireland/Scotland/Lincs - Sullivan
Northumberland/Durham - Nicholson, Cuthbert, Turner, Robertson
Berks - May
Beds - Brownell

I would also post to the  board for Kilkenny Ireland.

Remember the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census are available, even though not completely indexed.  The fact you can not find him on the English census is simply he had not yet moved across.

Another source of information might be the fact he was a coal miner, are there records for Coal Mines in the area where he worked.  The local record office might have something.
Taubman, Mitchell, Purcell - Lancashire,
Couglan, Byrnre - Ireland
Mullins, Bowditch, Crabb, Record - Dorset
