Dennison in Bedminster
« on: Tuesday 21 November 06 17:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have a Robert Dennison in my tree who was born in Bedminster about 1789 and who was a Gardener in the 1841 census.

In the "matthews" directory for 1793-94 for Bristol I found a James Dennison who was also a Gardener in Bedminster.

Does anyone know how i can find out if James was Roberts father or any other relation.

             Many Thanks, Paul.

Hi
Don't forget to look in Somerset.

Might be worth asking on the Somerset board as well.

Hi. I have some good news for you! I have been tracing my Dennison line in Bedminster for 25 years and can shed light on your query.

The James Dennison you mention is my greatggreatgreatgreatgreat grandfather. He was indeed a gardener in Bedminster,as was his son James and grandson William.

Robert Dennison, gardener, was the son of Joseph Dennison, also a gardener in Bedminster!

James was the son of John Dennison. Joseph was the son of Joseph Dennison.

I believe John and Joseph(elder) to be brothers, who emigrated from Scotland circa 1740-1750.

All the above lived in and around North Street and West Street, Bedminster.

If you require further information, such as dates, wives, children etc, then let me know.

How are you related to Robert Dennison?

Hi, This great.
I would love to know the DOB, occupation and wives of the two Joseph Dennison's, if you have the information!

I would also be interested to know any info you have on the Scottish connection.

I am descended from one of Robert Dennison's daughters, who married a man named George Caswell, who was a Miner in Bedminster.

Many Thanks for taking the trouble, Paul.

Hi Paul.I have listed below the information that I have for the Dennison branch that you are interested in. I found that during my research in Bedminster and Bristol that there are occasions when the Dennison name becomes Dennis. This has been confirmed to me by an independent professional researcher. Beware however, as the vast majority of Dennis entries in Bristol do indeed apply to Dennis families, not Dennisons!

You stated that you found Robert Dennison, born in Bedminster, gardener, in the 1841 census. I have not found him in the Bedminster census. Did you find him in the Bedminster census, or in the census for some other area?

I hope this information will be of some use to you. I will give you some info on the Scottish link, hopefully the week after next. Regards, Colin

Hi Colin,
I'm not certain but I think my Robert Dennison is listed in the 1841 census as "Robert Denniss".

He is a Coal Miner living in West Street in Bedminster and he is living with an Ann, who could be his daughter. He is also living with a Thomas who's date of birth fits in with Robert's son, John's date of birth on the info you sent me!??!

Thanks so much for taking the time to send this information, It has certainly filled out my family tree.

                    Best Wishes, Paul.  :D
