POLISH POW CAMPS UK 1947
« on: Tuesday 21 November 06 20:48 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to find some information on Polish POW Camps in the UK for a friend in Italy. The last known address on the polish draft card of the prisoner of war or whatever was, was a camp in 1947 named  Hardford  Bridge or similar. Its a love story about a father who never went back to an Italian mother and child and the daughter wants to know something about her father.

Oh what  a sad story.

We had many children in our school in the early 50s who were Polish and were from the Polish camp in Delemere  Cheshire. There was an American Army camp there called Camp Delemere which was used for Polish refugees after the war. I recommend you look at www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/content/articles and look for the Polish message board.  Maybe your friend's father died have you checked Cheshire deaths?

If the page does not open just put Polish message board in the search box and then click on Staffordshores Polish Community Message board.  By the way Hartford is near Delemere so it could be the place you want (different spelling)

Erin, Thanks, that's a good start, I have left a message on the board.

Best wishes George

The Poles were on the same side as us and so the camps were refugee not POW.  Many of them joined the forces and fought on our side.

For example the upstairs rooms of Dalkeith House near Edinburgh contain intricate drawings on the walls done by the Polish Airmen who were stationed there.  Some of these are of their insignia others of a more personal nature.

Hi David,

Please excuse my lack of knowledge. Any help I can get on this subject would be helpful, perhaps if you know more details about them in the last war you would let me know. It seems the person I am trying to locate was a Polish soldier Franciszek Tybur, his army records indicated he was in England in 1947, it hadn't occurred to me that he could be attached to our forces?

There are much better experts than me on this subject.  I know that there were Polish Divisions in Italy and Africa.  There was also one in France which when France fell retired to Switzerland where 1500 men were interred.

The Canadian Expeditionary Force had a Polish Division but I suspect that these were immigrants who were recruited in Canada.  It might be worth amending the title to this thread to Polish Soldiers (just modify your original post)
