Old Blaina Chapel
« on: Wednesday 22 November 06 09:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have a certificate of marriage of two ancestors of mine married in Blaina in 1864. The place of marriage is given as Old Blaina Chapel and underneath it says according to the rites of the Baptists . Does anyone know what chapel this would be please .

Hi there,

I too have family married at Old Blaina Chapel in 1898.
The info you have seems to be the same as mine.  The Minister on my cert. is T. Evans, Registrar Thomas Bevan.  My family were living at Abertillery at this time.  Don't know if this is in the same vicinity.  If you find out any more I would appreciate any info.

Hi there,
I have just received a marriage certificate for Old Blaina Chapel (rites and ceremonies of the Baptists) from march 1871, where the minister is John Lewis and the Registrar is Benjamin Lewis.  The bride and groom were both resident at Garnfach (Nantyglo/Blaina) at the time.  I'm not sure which chapel this is, but if you've got any further with your research on this, I'd love to hear what the answer is  :)

Cheers
Helen

Hi osprey,

thanks for the link - I thought it might've been Salem Baptist, but the link says a new chapel was built in 1852, so would they be calling it "old" Blaina Chapel in 1871?  Also there were probably lots of chapels of various denominations (Methodists etc), as I know there was in the town where I grew up, so possibly more than one Baptist chapel  ???  Is Salem Baptist still there (the records in the link go up to 1959)?

Hi  Helen
I Finally managed to get a little bit of info on Old Blaina Chapel,
On the marriage certificate of my ancestor Old Blaina Chapel 16-04-1864,the name for the minister is given as a “John Lewis” .There seems to be a lot of confusion over “old Blaina Chapel“, with no documented evidence that I can find .However the link below takes you to a webpage that says that one of the minister’s of Salem Baptist Church was  “John Lewis” .
So it’s quite possible that  Old Blaina Chapel was Salem Baptist Church
