Can anyone please tell me what this is
Gastro Enteric Catarrh. Convulsions.
This is the cause of death on a 6 month old child, in 1894.

Convulsions.......that's having fits.
Gastro Enteric Catarrh.......could it be something to do with gastroenteritis( nasty stomach upset).
Is the writing clear or could it be something else?

Thanks nanny Jan. I did know about convulsions, alot of Babies had/have them but not the other.
Its typed so I am going off the typed death certificate.

Gastro-enteric catarrh just means irritation or inflammation of the digestive tract. The baby was probably displaying signs of sickness and/or diarrhoea.

Thank you everyone for your help. I have just got 3 death certificates for 3 babies 6mths, 11mths and 24 days. One died of the above, aged 6mths.
One of Diphtheria and the youngest of convulsions. These two died within 8 weeks of each other.

Oh, shame.
I, too, have had some sad early deaths in the family, including discovering my Dad had two sisters he didn't even know about.
We grumble about the Health Service, but they're good, really.

Yes Meles I agree. To make things worse, their Father died 4 days after the 24 day old baby.
It's a wonder that his wife/their mother didn't go mad, but she just got on bring up the other three children.
