Hi, Betsy

Welcome to RootsChat.

Do you have the baptism details for the children.  If not, here they are, including some you didn't mention:

Harriet 5 Mar 1848
Louise Frances 4 Aug 1850
Mercy 7 Mar 1852
Alexander 4 Jun 1854
William 6 Jun 1856
Harry 4 Mar 1860
Ellen 1 Jun 1862
Thomas 7 Feb 1864
Albert 5 Aug 1866
Alice Florence 3 Jan 1869
Minnie 3 Dec 1871

The Fanny Wells who married John Isted - her father was Alfred Wells. (from BVRI2)

Alexander Wells (age 21) (father Joseph) married Mary Ann Hammond (age 24) in Mayfield 25 July 1875 (her father Henry Hammond) (also from BVRI2)

This seems to be the only marriage in Sussex recorded on that index for Joseph's children.  Mayfield doesn't seem to occur in the NBI2, so I can't check that for you.

Do you need any information on Joseph and Betsy?  Just say the word if you do.

Nell

Thank you Nell for the baptism dates and correction re. Fanny and John Isted.  I would like to take you up on your offer of further help with Betsy.   I know that her grandfather Henry Bennett m. Mary Ann Whitbread 15 Apr 1817 at Hellingly. Her father William Whitbread BENNETT was born 1826?   I would like to know if he had any siblings.   William Whitbread BENNETT m. Harriet HAFFENDEN 20 Jun 1847 at Heathfield.  Also puzzling me is Betsy's whereabouts in the 1881 census.  As you can probably guess I am fairly new to genealogy and as I have just celebrated my 8oth birthday and live in Devon I have very little chance of getting to Lewes Records Office to do any searching.

Suey,
Thank you so much for bringing the Sussex Weald site to my attention.    I have enjoyed browsing through it this morning and find that there is so much info in it.   Thank you once again.

Betsy.

Hi Betsy,

This is going to be a challenge - I have looked through the BVRI2 and neither Heathfield nor Hellingly are included on the index.  It doesn't help that the IGI does not cover them either. :(

Can I suggest that you ask on the look-up board for a check on the 1871 census for you - this should help pin down a few more dates and names perhaps.  If you give any names and occupations that you know for certain and a possible area to look in, that should help.  Unfortunately, I don't have access to these records, but I know a lot of people here do.

Yes, Devon to Lewes is a bit of long way!
