George Ovenden 1829 - 1898
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 17:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi there everyone,

I have just joined this forum so if I make a mistake I'm sure someone will kindly let me know!

My gtgtgrandfather George Ovenden was born c.1829 in West Hackney (Dalston), and I can find him on all the censuses from 1841 to 1891 except the 1881.  He was at that time married with 6 children but I cannot find him or any of his family no matter what I try.  He also had connections in Margate, Kent but no luck there either.  His wife Anna Maria (nee Swannell) died in 1883 and at that time they lived at 37 Myddelton Square, London.

I have come to the conclusion that the census piece that he is on must be missing.  Can anyone tell me if this is so?

If anyone can shed any light on George's whereabouts at this time I would be very pleased to know.

Regards

Interesting this one.
I did a blanket search of England using
George born 1829 +/- 2 and spouse Anna thinking if mistranscribed I could find them that way.
Obviously I didn't.
Do you have date and place of birth of Anna Maria?
dates and births and names of children?
Cheers, Cougar

Hi Cougar,

Thanks for your interest.  Here are the details:
Anna Maria, nee Swannell, bc 1828 Felmersham Beds
Children:
George Clare b 1852 West Hackney
Anna Maria b 1853 West Hackney
William Robert b 1855 Kensington
Henry H b 1857 Kensington
Edward Melville b 1858 Holborn
Charles Cosmo b 1859 Paddington

The only one I can find with any certainty is George the younger who is married to Naomi with a son, also George.

I hope you have better luck than I've had.  Sometimes fresh eyes can do the trick.

Regards

Sorry - have tried every combination I can think of and still no luck.
Even tried the middle names as surnames - but that didn't help.
Every census as far as I am aware has 'missing' areas - these were destroyed by fire, the war etc.  so quite possibly they were with my lot who also, don't want to be found.
There are still more 'bits and pieces' of census being found, but how long before they become available I have no idea.
If any of us can be of further help to you, (not that I have been),  just put in another posting.
Good luck,
Cougar
PS - yes, I did find George jnr. too but none of the others.

Hi Cougar, thanks for trying.  I'll just have to accept that they are not there.

I know what happened next to George, Anna Maria, George jnr & Anna Maria Jnr but I would have liked to find out what happened to the younger children.  They did have relatives (uncle Christopher Ovenden, possibly uncle Henry too) who had emigrated to Australia, so perhaps they went to join them.

That will give me another little problem to sort out!

If you need help with the Australian lot just do a posting on the Aussie board.
There are plenty of links for shipping, BDM's etc for Oz - and one of us will come to your rescue.
If you have the year and where the others went to, that would be a good start.
I assume you have checked the deaths/marriages  for the 'missing' ones?

Hi Cougar,

Thanks for the tip about the Aussie board.

Yes, I've searched for marriages and deaths but nothing there so unless the records haven't yet been transcribed it does seem that they have gone somewhere.

Thanks for your help,

Regards
