Can anyone explain........
« on: Wednesday 29 November 06 13:30 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know what it means when someone puts an 'E' in front of their ancestors name?

I've never seen this. Can you give an example (surname? is it used in a particular context?)

Hello

Could it be their offical first name which they don't use? i.e  E. John Smith (official name Edward but chooses not to use it and is known by middle name John)

Bear with me, it was a query from a friend, I have seen it and wondered but that was as far as it got.

I don't think it's an initial, but I could be wrong.

Apparently it is an 'E' before the place name, which I would suggest means ecclesiastical.  If anyone has any other suggestions  please feel free.

That explains something I've been wondering about on the indexes.

Might only mean East if it is front of a place name.  i.e. I was born in East Acton.  Some of my ancestors in North Lopham, some in South.  What place is it?
