McGrath/McNamara, Townland Unknown
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 02:14 GMT (UK) »
I would love to find out the Townland of my McGrath/McNamara ancestors from County Clare.

Ellen McGrath nee McNamara b. abt 1803 emigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1854 with the following children:

Patrick b. 1828
Lawrence b. 1830
Mary b. 1832
Catherine b. 1834
Ellen b. 1836
Johanna b. 1838
Honora b. 1840

The death certificate of Ellen 1803-1866 gives her place of birth as County Clare, her father as Dennis McNamara, farmer and mother as Mary Kenny and again on the marriage certificate of Lawrence McGrath I only get County Clare as his birth place.

I could of course continue to purchase marriage and death certs for other members of the family in the hope of finding their place of origin in Clare but fear I will go broke doing this  ::) SO if anyone has another suggestion as to how I could possibly can find their Townland I would be forever grateful.

Further to the above I should add Ellen married Patrick McGrath in 1828 County Clare. He does not appear with the family in the Shipping records and to date I cannot find a record of him coming to Australia.

If any these McGrath/McNamara/Kenny names mean anything to other County Clare researchers I would be very happy to hear from you.

Cheers
Sue

Hi Sue, to tell you a parish for Co, Clare would be impossible without more information.
But put up this web site, www.connorsgenealogy.com
Click on Ireland and on the drop down click on Clare.
Also there are about three people looking for Mc Grath.
Hope this helps you Sue. Good Luck.
                                   Lep. ;)

Hi Sue

I live in South Oz and  have Macnamara in my tree - my paternal grandmother was a Macnamara

The first reference are to marriages and death notices that link

Catherine b 1828c - 1882 married Michael Hickey and I have confirmed DNA link
James b 1827 - 1887 married Bridget Gleeson
John b 1829c - 1875 married Honorah Tierney and is my GGgrandfather

In the marriage notice in SA BDM books James is noted as father of John and James

John died in Mount Catherine near Kapunda which links back to a Mount Catherine in Clare

Michael and Mary Tierney ( Honorahs parents) death notice say Tipperary papers please copy

That is all I have

There is a Mountcatherine townland in Kiltenanlea civil parish in county Clare and west of Castleconnell. It's about 10 km from the county Tipperary border.
