GERMANY: From Hamburg to London 1836
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 12:40 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Johann Hinrich Blanken who arrived from Hamburg 2 Sept 1836 on the ship Columbine.  He is my husbands ggg.grandfather and though we have census records, etc. after his arrival in the UK we only know a few facts.  He died age 48 on the 19 April 1871 in London so born abt 1823.  We think he was born in Hannover and possibly Kirchtimke (if that was covered by Hannover then).  His name appears on the web site http://www.mawer.clara.net/sugarbbio.html as Blanckan Johann, origin Hannover, info from the Metzner Shipping Lists but afraid that's all I know.

If anyone can help me by pointing me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Regards
Pearl

The first question to ask is what further information about his father does John's marriage certificate give? Is this his marriage entry?

Marriages Mar 1843
BLANKEN  John Henry     Islington  3 133
JENNER  Sarah     Islington  3 133

Hi Valda,

Yes, they were married 29 Jan 1843, John Henry Blanken, Full Age, Bachelor, Sugar Refiner, Crescent Str. St George's East, Father: Henry Blanken, farmer.

The two witnesses were Charles & Caroline Jenner.  Johann's name at the bottom is not completely clear and my knowledge of German being zero I am assuming that it says Johann Heinrich Blanken.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing on the Vital Records Index Western Europe - German Region.
The nearest the IGI has is

JOHANN HENRICH BLANKE
Christening:  05 DEC 1824   Evangelisch, Krange, Westfalen, Preussen
Father:  HENRICH BLANKE
Mother:  MARIA CATHARINA DOERNEMANN

There were other Germans with the same surname in the East End of London censuses working in the sugar refining trade. Have you checked out any of them to see if there was a connection?

Regards

Valda

Thank you.  I also found this one this afternoon, he may be the one for two reasons i.e. his date of birth plus his father's name, not though is it!

Do you know what area this would have been in in the early 1800's?  I have a web site someone sent me that he may be listed on if only I knew where to look - http://www.ortsfamilienbuecher.de/

Thanks
