Here are a couple of the the ideas from the books. As I said earlier some are common sense. Also, the vignettes are interesting to read.
- use others as sounding boards and network
- remember the original documents might contain clues that are missed or mistranslated
- visit the places your ancestors lived
- pay attention to the smallest piece of information
- re visit the information you already have
- do on site research
- maintain an open mind
- apply your own experience and insight
- take classes
- be prepared to spend money
- above all never give up
