No I don't have either book.

I borrowed / checked them out from the local library along with a couple of other genealogy books.

I found both books were easy to read and offered many uniques ideas on solving genealogy problems. Some are common sense approaches to finding / locating records but others aren't. I don't have the books with me now so I will post another message later with some of the ideas mentioned in the books.  :)

What I didn't find were any of my missing ancestors ....

liverpool annie -  :)

Here are a couple of the the ideas from the books. As I said earlier some are common sense. Also, the vignettes are interesting to read.

- use others as sounding boards and network

- remember the original documents might contain clues that are missed or mistranslated

- visit the places your ancestors lived

- pay attention to the smallest piece of information

- re visit the information you already have

- do on site research

- maintain an open mind

- apply your own experience and insight

- take classes

- be prepared to spend money

- above all never give up

I agree with all of those yn9man !!  :D :D ............ especially network !!  ;)

( helping others makes them more enthusiastic to help you ! ) and going over stuff you already have !

( I hunted high and low for my Granddads service number for months ..... and when I decided the time had come to organise .... I found my Grandmothers death certificate and it had Granddads number right there !!  ::) )

But I'd also add ............... being organised and lateral thinking !! ( thinking outside the box !! )

Networking and exchange of ideas / thoughts ... Have been extremely beneficial on this site.  :)  :)

I think most folks involved in genealogy (whether as a hobby or business) are lateral thinking or outside the box thinking individuals. You almost have to be ... i.e. want to solve one mystery / puzzle in order to open up another mystery / puzzle.
