Help Needed to Get Started on the Dyson's
« on: Sunday 03 December 06 02:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have had a lot of success gathering information on all sides of my family except my maternal grandfather's side. This is the only information I know and I'm hoping someone can give me some advice about where to search.

John Edwin Dyson
b: 3/4/1903 in West Riding, Yorkshire
d: 1964 Grays, Essex

He married Phyllis Pickering and they had 3 sons and 1 daughter. I am not sure of the date they married.

John Edwins parents were Edwin Dyson & Mary Olive. As far as my grandfather can remember John Edwin was one of 5 children.

Phyllis Pickering died about 1974-1975 but I don't know when she was born.

Phyllis Pickering's parents were William Pickering and Harriett Nelson. I have found William & Harriett were married in 1905 in Huddersfield England.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Emma

John Edwin Dyson was born in the Huddersfield area -
2Q 1903
DISTRICT: Huddersfield
Volume 9a
Page 339

FreeBMD doesnt have his parents marriage (Edwin D and Mary Olive) yet transcribed .... so you would have to work back in the full GRO Marriage Registers (free on Ancestry) to find it - I'd advise searching for Mary Olive first, and when you get a hit, search for a Dyson marrying with the same Refn info (District, Vol, Page, Year and Quarter) - dont restrict it to Edwin - he may have had other forenames he used....

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8965

It may be that others on here have access to other Indices for the area - so wait a bit !  HtH

I cant see a Mary Olive as a single person in 1901 Yorkshire, which  m a y  indicate that they married before 1901 - or that she wasnt a Yorkshire lass !

Was Mary's surname Olive, or was that her middle name?

Free BMD has this marriage:

Thanks for the help. I 'm waiting on more information from and English relative, so for now I'll move on to the Pickering/Nelson side.
Thanks again

Just for your information - you could have done all this yourself.  I know it would spoil our fun in finding it but it would give you more of a thrill to find it yourself!    If you go to ancestry.co.uk there are various bits of it that are free to use and the complete BMDs is one of them.   They are hidden away down the right hand side of the home page usually but once you are in there then you are away - every birth, death and marriage since 1837 at your fingertips.
Have fun!
Andrea
