1851 Census lookup
« on: Monday 04 December 06 08:55 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for further info on William Dixon and his family, who were shown on the 1841 census at Woodnesborough, Summerfield with the following:
William Dixon, 40, Ag Lab
Frances, 30
Mary, 14
John, 9
Frances, 7
William, 4
Sarah, 2
All born in the county.
I have not been able to find much on the IGI, and hope the places of birth and possibly other children will add further clues. This is my first post, but I have already learned heaps just by browsing. Thanks for all the help.

Hi Didy,

Welcome to RootsChat  :D

Is it a coincidence ? We had a look-up for this family only yesterday !

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,198051.msg1002754.html#msg1002754

We found them in 1841 but not in 1851, unfortunately.

Newfy found Sarah age 12 in 1851, a servant born Woodnesborough.

I can also see a Frances Dixon age 16, a servant at Charlton St James in 1851. Her birthplace is Staple, Kent. No idea whether she is a possible.

I can't see any trace of other family members  :-\

Thanks for your help, Tanja. The Frances you mention is probably the same one - on the IGI as Frances Ewell DICKSON, chr. 8 Jun 1834 at Staple, Kent. Father, William DICKSON, mother, Frances.

Do you think I could stretch your goodwill to have a look for the family in 1851 with the Dickson spelling, or would that be done by soundex automatically?

Unfortunately, I have already tried all sorts of variations, searches on 1st names only etc but couldn't find them  :(

Perhaps somebody else will have more luck ...

Hi Didy

I don't know if you are still looking for this family so, just in case, there is also, on the IGI, Mary DIXON bp 1826 Eastry and Sarah 1839 Woodnesborough.

Looking at the name Frances EWELL DIXON, I wondered whether the mother could have been named EWELL?  Then I saw a Frances DIXON married, one of the two possible spouses, a John STONE in the Eastry registration district 1854 and consequently came up with the following:

1871

New St, Ash, Kent

John STONE head mar 74 ag lab b.Ash
Frances wife 64 b.Eastry
Robert brother widr 74 b.Ash

RG10/999 folio 31 page 11
.................................

1861

New St, Ash, Kent

John STONE head mar 60 ag lab b.Ash
Fanny wife 54 b.Eastry
Stephen son 21 ag lab b.Sandwich

RG9/539 folio 29 page 10
.............................

Previous to 1861 John STONE was with a different wife but I still couldn't see Frances in 1851 :-\

It looks like they are quite possibly in Eastry Union workhouse in 1881.

Many thanks for that, Casalguidi, particularly for picking up Frances' second marriage.

I SHOULD still be working on this line, but it has been on the back-burner for a while.

Didy.

Thanks for following that up, but fortunately I have already looked at the records on film. Just as well, because that particular marriage had been wrongly transcribed on the IGI, even though it was an extracted entry. The transcriber had William Dixon married to a woman from an entry on the opposite page!

My main problem with William Dixon is finding an appropriate christening record for him. It's a fairly common name, which doesn't help.

The Eastry marriage register says "of Woodnesborough", where most of his children were christened, and where he was buried in Sep 1851, but there isn't a christening record there for him  :( .
