Betts/Bates?
« on: Tuesday 05 December 06 10:35 GMT (UK) »
I'm struggling at the moment with lines of investigation of a Betts family in Strood/High Halstow and was hoping for some advice.

I've found Elizabeth Mary Betts Christened 27 Sep 1868 Strood F John M Eliza Catherine. I've also found other siblings, William Henry Betts and George Salmon Betts but cannot find any record of a marriage of John and Eliza despite extensive searches on the parish records for the area (many thanks to whoever posted the Cityark link, it's fantastic  :)).

I've now found a John Betts that was the right age and area born of parents Benjamin Betts and Mary Wood. The strange thing is as I've looked for siblings I've found lots of other children born to a Benjamin and Mary in the same parish but the name appears as Bates.

My quandry is, is this a likely mistake in Parish records Bates/Betts? I have noticed corrections before in the entries before so I know they did make mistakes. Has anyone else had this sort of problem before?

Hi Marmot

I see (from one of your other posts) that you have the family in 1871

1871 Census England Kent Strood
RG10/899/73/9
High Street

BETT
John Head Marr 40 Labourer Kent High Halston
Eliza Wife Marr 36 Kent Stoke
William Son Unmarr 11 Scholar Kent High Halston
George Son Unmarr 8 Scholar Kent Strood
Elizabeth Dau Unmarr 3 Scholar Kent Strood

Do you have the family in 1861 which could narrow down a time frame for a marriage or perhaps any idea of Eliza's maiden name from one of the childrens' birth certificate?

Hi Casalguidi,

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a census entry for the family in 1861 as I was unable to find it - probably because of the surname variation. I've been looking for a marriage between about 1948 -1960. I haven't got a birth certificate for any of the children but that will be my next move to get Eliza's maiden name.

I've answered my own question re: Betts/Bates as I did a surname search and found Aussie33 has family from Kent with the same variation. It does make things more complicated though trying to work out was the correct spelling and which was the misspelling.  :-\

Cheers,
marmot

Hi Marmot

I would think that they are quite likely to be the John BETTS who married (one of the two possible spouses) Eliza Catherine SAMMON in the September quarter of 1855 in the North Aylesford registration district ref. 2a 422

Might it narrow down looking for a marriage (assuming it wasn't a registry office or non-conformist ceremony) if you now know that they probably married in July/August/September 1855

The North Aylesford district covered these parishes http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/north%20aylesford.html

Gosh!! I think it's very likely to be Eliza Sammon (probably Salmon) based on George's middle name. Thank you so much for that
