death look up - lead ore smelter
« on: Thursday 07 December 06 13:13 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with a death lookup please?  i am looking for Joseph Pearson who died between 1861 and 1871.

Joseph was born 1826 in Allendale.  I think I have him on the 1841 in Hexham.  He married in 1846 in Hexham.  On the 1851 he is in Willington Quay near Jarrow.  1861 he is in Preston Yorkshire (near Leyburn, I think).  On all these returns he is listed as a lead ore smelter.  In 1871 his widow has returned to Hexham.

I am looking for his death - I know who he isn't!  He is not the guy listed in 1864 Q4 hexham 10b p158.  I have managed to trace this man on the 1851.  I also know he is not the guy listed in 1861 Q3 Bedale 9d p 335.  This was a young baby.

I cannot find any other Joseph Pearson in the hexham area but there are several possibilities in the surrounding areas.  As he lived for a time in Willington, I wonder if he travelled elsewhere thru his work which is why I am posting.  Can anyone use their knowledge of the lead ore works in the surrounding areas and hazard a guess as to the death of Gt Gt grandfather rather than me send off for numerous death certs!

Many thanks

sallysmum,

Williington Quay, Northumberland was near to Jarrow, Co Durham,... but only for crows !. The River Tyne is in the way. LOL

Willington was a mining village in western Co Duham.

Nanny - this is interesting.  So far, I only have 1 child for Joseph - John Sparke Pearson B 1849 in Hexham.  The reason this is interesting is that I cannot find Josephs widow's death.  I am presently looking at the possibility that she remarried as there is a Phoebe Pearson marrying in Tynemouth in 1874.  Was there any lead ore mines in Tynemouth?

Michael -  :-[ - i don't know what I was thinking when I said Willington was near Jarra!  My apologies as only a geordie descendant, not a true hinnie!

Many thanks

Sorry, can't help with lead ore mines in Tynemouth; my lot are from Suffolk, London and Kent!

It is to be remembered that a "Tynemouth" BMD registration, only means the BMD was registered "with" Tynemouth Registration District.

This district covered a wide area, including many towns and villages beyond Tynemouth town,

The list of Tynemouth's sub-district offices will give a flavour of ithe expanse of it's territory...

*Blyth,
*Cramlington
*Earsdon ( covering Seaton Delaval etc)
*Whitley ( old name for Whitley Bay)
*Longbenton ( nearly into Newcastle City, including Walker)
*Wallsend ( again nearly into Newcastle... and including Willington Quay)
* North Shields.
* and more than one in Tynemouth itself.

All the above places had more than it's fair share of coal pits, but I do not think there was any iron ore operations.
