I had a new type of e-mail from Genes Reunited today
« on: Thursday 07 December 06 20:23 GMT (UK) »
I got a mail from Genes Reunited today saying that they believe they have found one of my ancestors on the 1901 census. I have no problem in them trying to be helpful, but just how many people will have entered the names of 19th century relatives without recourse to 1901? What really bugs me though was even though I had entered g grandmother's name, date of birth and place of birth, the page to which my e-mail was linked contained a dozen 'suspected' relatives, none of whom was my relative.

Not sure if I am being unfair to them or if they are genuinely trying to find some new services to offer based on what they hold. I suspect they are trying to encourage people to access 1901. Anyone else got any opinions?

I had one as well, my person was born in New Zealand so it's highly unlikely they would find him on the 1901 census, or infact any English census. Just wish they would check where people were born.

I've had this from GR too.  It seems to be their policy to find a name and attach it you whether it's genuine or not, and they never have been yet.

Yep, same here.

The daft thing was that the name listed on the link to the email was my gg grandmother's maiden name (Ann Barnett) even though she's clearly on my Genes tree as married to George Bishop in 1838!!  Doh!   :P

I'd like to be more charitable but I think it's a blatant exercise in trying to get us to spend more money, but, then again, Ancestry do the same thing.

I hope not too many people will fall for it.

Well at least the person they put forward to me has the same name as my ancestor and was born in the same year, so she would have been in 1901 census. They must have some pretty good software to be certain of always excluding the right match. Really sophisticated.
