Hello Joe, My next step is to find James' father and his family. I think James had 2 brothers Thomas possibly d in 1875* and David, nothing known except he may have had a daughter Hannah: also James had at least 2 sisters: Jane d 30 Apl 1880 and Elsbeth, nothing known. I have nothing on the father except his initials may be H.M.?  and he may have died in 1877. The H could be for Henry(family name)
*May have been James' son,
Repeated given names of the family males have been:- Thomas(3), John(2), Henry(2), Alfred(2), William(2), Charles(2),James(4),Fredrick. Females:-Catherine(2), Forsythe(2), Mary, Jane ,Helen.
As you see things are a little sparse. Is it possible to see if James' father is given on James marriage certificate/register 18th Nov 1830 St Andrews, Fife? Thankyou again for Monica's and your help, regards Ian.

Hello iand8

Taking into consideration the names Penelope (Panellopy) Gardener (Gardner) as child of James Davidson and Catherine Forsyth I think it would be reasonable to say that James parents were Thomas Davidson and Penelope Gardner. On IGI C114539 ( St Andrews and St Leonards, Fife) they are listed as parents of
Thomas Davidson b. 25 Mar 1790
Elspeth Davidson b. 29May 1792
Elizabeth Davidson b. 27Mar 1794
Helen Davidsonb. 25 Mar 1796 (mother down as Ann Gardner)
David Davidson b. 19 Oct 1798
James Philp Davidson b. 20 Apr 1802

James Davidson, gardener, widower of Catherine Forsyth, son of Thomas Davidson and Penelope Davidson, m.s. Garner (sic) died aged 77 March 20 1880 at Kenly Green, St Andrews. Informant son Thomas Davidson. This is all available on death certificate from SP. I had made the erroneous assumption from your first post that you had checked the certificate and it was lacking in detail as are some death certificates.

You haven't responded to the last few posts so I'm not sure if you still need assistance with this family but I was in the library today and checked a couple of deaths.
Thomas Davidson, husband of Penelope Gardner died Boarhills, St Andrews, Fife 11th June 1825 and his wife,  Penelope Davidson m.s. Gardner, died aged 89 also Boarhills.
