Peckovers in Toronto?-COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 10 December 06 11:41 GMT (UK) »
Am having trouble finding relatives in Ontario despite what seem to be fairly uncommon names-

Horace Peckover
born 29 July 1853 England
died 12 Sept.1930
Married 20 Aug.1877 Liverpool, Queens, N.S.
to Bessie Gardner
born 4 Dec.1853 N.S.
died 8 Jan.1926.
According to family tradition there were two sons- Cecil & Horace, both steel merchants in Toronto.

Last night I found Cecil Roderick Peckover, steel merchant, Toronto, born c1878, travelling to U.S. several times.

Ancestry.com lists 1 entry for Cecil Peckover in Ontario, Canada Marriages 1857-1922. Could someone look up this record for me?

1901 Census Horace and wife Bessie (Bessy) living at Elderslie, Bruce North, Ontario.

They should be in 1881 & 1911 census but I haven't found them. Also, where are the sons in 1901?

Also found mention of a George Peckover "Recollections of Ellis Avenue and Swansea Toronto" who could be connected- Cecil gave his address as 233 Ellis Ave. in 1941.

Can anyone help?

Kd- thank so much for looking up the marriage so quickly. It is the person I'm looking for. In 1941 Cecil gave his birthplace as Toronto so never would have looked for his birth in US.

Forgot to mention in original post that Cecil's father, Horace Peckover was a minister. I thought he went from England to Nova Scotia to Ontario but have just a few minutes ago discovered that he was all over the place!

Rev. Horace Peckover minister of Mehoopany & Meshoppen Presbyterian Churches, living in Mehsoppen, Wyoming Co., Pennsylvania (not sure of dates).

Also, 29 June 1917 found Horace and wife Bessie travelling from Hamilton, Bermuda to Toronto, Ontario via N.Y.

Will have to widen my searches to include U.S. and Bermuda.

Thanks again.

Hello hello,

I was able to find two references to two Peckover's that I believe are yours.

One is a Ernest Peckover in WW1 attestation papers.

http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gpc013/571201a.gif

He lists his mother as Margaret from North Bay (which I am figuring to be your Margaret).   Please note there are two other Peckover's listed one from Yorkshire, and one from Surrey.

http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=582352

This is from the St. George Society (??) book/paper.  It lists a Cecil R. Peckover who died in 1964.

Found this just now.

http://www.elginogs.ca/newsindexes/timesjournal/sttj1941janthrujun.html ... Go down the page to page 10....

Hope this little bit helps ....

Jeff

Jeff- thanks for the information.
Cecil R. Peckover d.1964 gives me a date of death now.
Ernest William Peckover in attestation papers was born 1 Mar.1895 and Cecil only married 1913 so he doesn't belong to my family.
Tried to open 3rd link but site came up as not valid.

Since my last posting I have discovered C.R.(Cecil) age 18 & H.J. (Horace) age 15 Peckover traveling from Jamaica to Boston in transit to Toronto. Young Horace born in Jamaica and Cecil in US. It looks like the boys were sent to school in Toronto.

Just got the engagement announcement by going through website- very interesting. That's probably the George Peckover I found later on.

Not sure if Charles and Andrew are the same. Did come across Peckovers in Winnipeg that are not connected.

Thanks again

Well here's the link to the Peckover's in Craik in case they are yours.

On a side note, I did find a few references linking a W. H. Peckover as a minister to a few areas in Canada... I don't know what W. H. stands for (William Horace?? just a guess :))
