WW2 Royal Navy Medals Records
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 14:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

How can I find out whether my uncle, P R Linsey, received any medals in WW2?

He was killed when his ship, HMLST 420, was sunk by a mine 7/11/1944.  I need this info PDQ since a new war memorial is being set up and they need the details by 14/1/07.  Needless to say I have only just found out.

Hi Rumpuscat

You need to contact RAF Innsworth but I'm not sure you would get the details by then :-\

Thanks, Cas

I see that you have to write to them!  Not much chance of a quick reply at this time of year, as you say.

I was a baby when my father, in RAF, was lost in this disaster and my mum didn't tell me or my sisters much so got in touch with Min. of Defence in '89 for his listings and received some of them. No mention of Walcheren only Ostend, so thankyou for that. Visited the memorial at Blankenberge, Belgium and Runnymede. Hope you got the correct info. for the memorial.

Was your father on HMLST 420?  My grandparents were informed that my uncle had been lost in the Walcheren campaign but that had happened some weeks earlier and HMLST 420 went down off Ostend.

In the end it didn't matter about medals, etc, as the memorial simply states initial and surname under the particular service and/or scene of operations.  This is one side of the memorial showing the names of my great-uncles killed in WW1.  My uncle is on the far side.  Thank you for your good wishes.

Yes. My father 'was on board Landing Ship(Tanks) No420 on 7-11-1944, when it hit a mine off Ostend and sank with heavy loss of life. Of 265 RAF people on board, 233 were killed '. He was with No1BSU 26 group and his body was never recovered. This tragedy was the basis for last year's sermon at Runnymede for Remembrance Sunday.

My uncle was in the RN, part of the ship's crew -  he was 19.

I didn't know about the Runnymede sermon, I will look it up.  Thank you.

Hello, this is my first post here. I found this site whilst using good old Google!

My Grandad was also killed on LST 420...he was in the RAF.
I would love to know further details of this tragedy..if any of you have any please?

His name was George Horace Payne...sadly his wife (my Nan) and daughter (my Mum) are no longer with us, so I have no way of finding anything out from any family.
