Henry Olive Young and Jessie Clarke (Cape Town)
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 22:00 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find any informatiion regarding  Henry Olive Young who emigrated to Cape Town from Bristol, England in about 1900. He was born in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire in June 1872. He married a Jessie Clarke also from Bristol. I'm assuming he married her in South Africa. Henry became a successful businessman over there.
His parents were Henry Young and Betsy Greenway.
I'm looking to find any details of Henry Olive's marriage, children, passenger lists.
Thankyou so much.

Hi there,
All i can find so far is the death of Jessie in 1948. You can try emailing the archives and you may get a reply but they are very slow to reply. one of our other members of Rootschat goes into the archives in Cape Town frequently and perhaps she can help - hence the modified heading. at the moment most of South africa is on holiday so it may be  while before you get a reply.
Will continue looking

Just thought I'd add this cause it is Ironic. My grandmother who died in 2004's name was Ann Young Clarke. Her grandfathers name was Jesse Clarke (from England). I am actually trying to find out more there because he was one of 2 brothers who came to South Africa, he married a coloured woman and the other white. But perhaps there is a connection, that this Jesse Clarke too was named after her grandfathers brother???

I don't have more info but if you wanna figure this out together contact me on (*)

Thankyou for your posting. I'll do a bit of digging and see if I can come up with a connection.

Hi Joanna21,
A long while has passed since you posted your enquiry which I fell upon today while "surfing" the net, and your inquiries may have long since been satisfied.
Henry Olive Young was my grandfather. According to my records (an original Cape Town property title deed in my possession) he was born on 1 March 1872. He died in Cape Town in the late 1950's. He had two sons - George Greenway b. Cape Town 19 July 1916 ; d. Cape Town 30 May 2004, and Dudley who died in the 1960's if I correctly recall.
HO Young was a successful business man in Cape Town
GG Young was a well known Cape Town shipping journalist and author, public speaker, Christian youth worker and lay preacher.
I never knew his wife Jessie.
What can you tell me about my ancestors?
Kind regards
