An Australian can Answear this I think
« on: Wednesday 17 November 04 23:23 GMT (UK) »
I have a Friend In Queensland who wants to have another go at her family tree. Trouble is she is trying to start with her G.Grandmother  Alice Rose White who was born in England,(date Unknown) and  was married  to Richard Heath (date Unknown)  Sometime before 1880 they went to Australia. their children  one of them my friends Grandmother was born 16th Jan in 1880/81 and lived in Queensland. So she needs to start there with the birth for 1880/81. I believe the certificates are much more informative than our skimpy ones :) I have never heard any mention of an Australian census is there such a thing. I am trying to start my friend off on her tree. Not knowing much about Oz Records what can i advise her to do? I am trying to get my friend to Join Rootschat but she finds Genealogy scary :)

Hi Celia,

If you can find the Grandmother's death certificate that should give where she was born and her birth certificate should give clues to where her parents were married and where they were born.

Hi Celia

Australian records are fairly comprehensive and most local libraries or the local genealocial society will have the CDRom indexes that have been created by Digger software and are very easy to search.

The indexes are window based and can be search by surname limiting to the parents names, so theoretically you can print off all children born to a couple as long as the birth was registered.

Cheers
Genni

Hi Celia,
Found the following. There are also quite a few other children born to the couple.
l think the mother's name may have been confused.

Alice Rose HEATH
Born 16 Jan 1880
Father. Richard HEATH
Mother. Anne Irena WHITE
Reference. 1880/004187
Digger. Queensland Pioneer Index 1829 -1889.

Hi Celia

Until 2000 (after much lobbying) the original Australian Census data was destroyed, and only the statistics kept. There is some very early muster/census data but I believe nothing past 1840.

As others have mentioned Australian Certificates contain somewhat more information than English ones. Birth certificates should show the marriage date, location and ages of parents and the name/age of any other sibblings.

As posted by another member, details of what is on our certificates is at
http://www.westnet.com.au/talltrees/civil_registration.htm.
and I posted an example of part of a death certificate on this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=19341.msg71771#msg71771

Qld certificates pre 1890 are available from the Qld archives
http://www.archives.qld.gov.au  who provide a very good service. After this date you have to apply via the BDM registry and I do not enjoy their service or requirements!  http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/home.htm

Thank you for the information given on the above subject.
I am very grateful as I feel I haven't a clue knowing  about searching for Family History.  Also thanks Celia for helping me. ???  Splinter.
