can anyone help

i am looking for the birth of my great grandfather which is proving impossible i know he was born in leicestershire in 1885 his name is john william cooper his mothers maiden name should be bailey there is a small possibility that it might be powell as his father is married twice. i really am stumped as to why i cant find it :-\

There's two John William Coopers around that time in Ashby de la Zouche

June qtr 1885 & March qtr 1886

Well it's unfortunately not an uncommon name, however there is one entry for

John William Cooper June qtr 1885 Ashby de la Zouche, Leicestershire 7a 91

and another
John William Cooper March qtr 1886 Ashby de la Zouche Leicestershire 7a 113

If you decide to order one of them from the GRO then make the proviso that the father's name was correct, that way if it's wrong they will refund part of your fee.

You can alternatively ask them to do a three consecutive year search for you specifying your own criteria which will cost £11.50

is there anyway i can find out the mothers maiden name before ordering i know warwickshire and staffordshire have their own site which i have searched myself with success

Well that theory is up the spout,the only marriages I could find between a John Cooper and ***** Bailey were,Rosanna 1883 Wimborne Dorset,and the other one **** Powell, was 1884 Mary Jane Newcastle on Tyne..... :-\

Only if you can find the baptism either on the IGI or in the Parish Registers at the Record Office,  I'm afraid.
