Burial in Wokingham ???
« on: Sunday 24 December 06 15:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi.

Please can anybody help ???  I m trying to trace a burial of Edwin White.  I think it could be Wokingham. He died on 22nd August 1889 aged 66. I don t know if it would have been a parish church burial or municipal cemetery.

I d be grateful for any help

  Regards

There is no municipal cemetery in Wokingham but there are a number of parishes and a free church cemetery.  Can you give some idea of where he lived as this may help to locate which parish he is likely to have been buried in.

Berkshire FHS have recorded most of the MIs for Wokingham and a lot have been submitted to the national burial index.  I am currently in Canada for Christmas but when I return to Wokingham in the new year I will check my records more thoroughly.

Hi David,

Thanks very much for your reply.  He actually died at 139 Walmer Road, Notting Hill, London   I have made extensive enquiries around the burial grounds there without success.  However, his wife Esther was from Wokingham and they settled there after marriage in 1848 where their four daughters were born.   Esther s death is also registered there earlier in 1889 although I don t know the exact date.

His Will states Edwin White late of London Road, Wokingham as well as the Notting Hill address so obviously they maintained a strong connection with the town.

This is as much as have to go on so I do hope you can find something from this.

Thanks again for kind offer and a very happy festive season to you.

Nimrod,

I've checked the berkshire Burial Index - no Edwin White buried in 1889, I'm afraid.

For your information, the Wokingham coverage on the CD is:

Wokingham All Saints 1813-54 (so, still a possibility?)
   " Baptist 1841-1906
"  Free Church Burial Ground 1921-2004 ( don't know when it began burials so could be a possibility)
Wokingham St Paul 1864-1895 and 1924-61

It might be worth following up on some of them with the Berkshire Records Office but - if he died in London - isn't it more likely he'd be buried there?

Anyway, I suppose I'd better go and do something Christmassy!!   :-\

Have a good one!   ;)

Hi Jill,

Thanks very much for your help, I will follow up your leads. I did just wonder about Wokingham as his  wife died there and I presume is buried there but who knows ??  This could be a tricky one I think.

Thanks again and have a really good Xmas.

I live in London Road and the original church All Saints is also in London Road and so there is a chance when I get back I may be able to find something.  All Saints is still an active churchyard and I know Berks FHs brought their MIs up to date for it earlier this year.

I have found nothing in the Wokingham records to which I have access.

I will have a wander round the All Saints churchyard when the weather is a little drier.  A lot of the older graves are in an area "deleberately left to
encourage wild life"

What was Esther's maiden name?  That may give me a lead.  A quick look at BMD shows a Q4 1849 marriage in Reading district to a Esther Candy.  Do you have a church for the marriage?  Does this mean that the William Cardery age 18 in the 1881 census is a relation?  Was Edwin born in Satley? or Saltley in Southampton or Yateley which is not far from Wokingham but in Hampshire.

I see that in 1851 from the ancestry index that they were living in Berkshire in 1851.  Have you seen that entry?  Does it give an address? Finding an address for them will give a better lead as to in which churchyard he might be buried.

There is no address shown on the 1851 census, however a couple of households away is Scots Farm and further on is New Warren House.

Hope this helps.
