Barnsley and Rotherham BMD certificates
« on: Sunday 24 December 06 16:20 GMT (UK) »
From the UKBMD Newsletter, 24th. December 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear all,
    I've recently been informed by Johnathon Gash that
Barnsley and Rotherham now have their own BMD sites on-line.
Many thanks to Johnathon for this information.
The links to them are available on the 'Local BMD' page
and also via the Yorkshire County page.(*)
They have created their own sites rather than being part of Yorkshire
BMD. I have written to them inviting them to be part of Yorkshire BMD
as I believe that we all would benefit from this, but have yet to hear
back from anyone.
Perhaps if others were to write to them ... ?  ;-)
A comment from the UKBMD mailing list, re Barnsley BMD:
Hi
I have just taken a look and the site is hosted by the local authority. You can
access at: http://www.barnsley.gov.uk
It seems to be in its infancy - the coverage details are:
All Births, Deaths and Marriages 1997 to 2005 This is a complete record for these
years
St Mary's Church of England Church, Barnsley 11th July 1837 to 12th August 1974
Collection of this information is ongoing
St George's Church of England Church, Barnsley 8th August 1837 to 24th October 1911
Collection of this information is ongoing
Most of the data seems to be that which would have been computerised as part of the
normal process. The project work seems pretty limited as yet so this is a good time
to try to bring them within YorkshireBMD. It would seem a shame to split the efforts
in Yorkshire. Even if they want to maintain their own site, It may be possible to
persuade them to provide index data so that it is also available on YorkshireBMD
searches.
The search program is pretty basic and contains at least one bug (whatever earliest
year you enter for birth searches, it asks you to enter a valid year - eventually
deleting the year produces results).
Biggest weakness is that it does not produce marriage partners (though to its credit
does offer father's surname which can help with stepchildren and widows).
