McCauley Belfast - Salford 1845-1871
« on: Monday 25 December 06 14:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Help please on any info regarding Macauleys/McCauleys in Belfast. Traced my name back to the Salford 1871 census as far as my GG Grandad, Thomas and his wife Jane.  They were both born in Belfast.  More useful is they had 2 girl babies with them who were:
Margaret (Maggie?) aged 4 born Belfast and Emma, aged 2 also born Belfast.
this narrows it down to all four of them leaving Belfast between 1869-71.
(My G Grandad Robert was born in Salford in 1877)

Thomas born in Belfast 1845, and Jane in 1847.  I assume they were married there. and that there babies were baptised/registered in a Belfast church.  They were protestant.  Thomas's profession in 1871 - wood turner.
Any help regarding finding them and their wider NI family would be much appreciated.
cheers Simon Macauley

Hi Simon,

I am sure that your g grandad's birth cert will give his mum's maiden name, doesn't it say?

I have look up on Northern Irish marriage entries and births as well.

There is no Jane as a wife on marriage entries.

There is no Thomas as a father on any birth entries.

I am sorry if this is not much help you are seeking. If you find his mum's maiden name.

Do post here--we will try and look for a good match for you!

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi again,

Sorry to inform you that I could not find any marriage registrations with the Jane Simpson.

However, I find this marriage registration:

George McCaughey & Mary Jane Simpson in 1864.

Do not know if it is yours.

Another "theory" is that Jane Simpson may be his second wife and his Belfast-born children may be from his previous marriage. Their mother may had passed away.

The angle here to consider about is that Thomas may had married in the church but did not bother to register the marriage. I know the Protestants were more than likely to register the marriages.

It sounds like that your Thomas may be Catholic and it may means his Belfast-born children were baptised in one of the churches in Belfast. They are not likely to be registered.

OR they were but the surname was mistranscribed somehow!!

Terribly sorry if I am not much of help! Even the ancestryireland do not have these children or his marriage there.

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Simon,
No online database for births marriages and deaths in Ireland  is complete -very far from it, but you're in luck with your two births :):

First with a very quick search I found these two below on the IG -  It's always worth searching the LDS site (note the two different spellings of the surname of the two children):

Emma McCawley was born 26th June 1868 in Belfast to Thomas McCawley and Jane Simpson
Margaret Mcauley 28th April 1866 to the above parents

Next I had  a quick look on ancestryIreland ( Ulster Historical Foundation). There is only one Emma McCawley listed with them on their site( It's in 1868 and spelled the same way as the IG and the same way as the below civil index info for her-  so it looks as if its a very good possibility it is her if you want to pay to view it) . There is also a birth listed in the year of 1866 for a Margaret Mcauley which looks a good possibility too.

I then looked on Emerald Ancestors as  they have some (not all) births and marriages  from the civil indexes ( transcribed)  and you're totally in luck there too for  both of them (again note the same spellings - as it does look as if they are both registered under these same two different spellings in the civil indexes)
*Civil births:
Emma McCawley   26th June 1868, civil district Belfast, Sub district Belfast no 3 . Parents are Jane Simpson and Thomas McCawley

and
Margaret Mcauley,28th April 1866, civil district Belfast, Sub district Belfast No 5 . Parents are Jane Simpson and Thomas Mcauley

You can either order the birth certificates for the two girls from either of the GRO's in Ireland by using the *above civil birth index info I've given you, or pay for a transcription from Family Ulster, or you can view the transcribed  birth details  at the UHF (ancestryIreland) for 6 pounds each  for Emma and Margaret

The marriage:
I also quickly looked for a marriage. None on Emerald ancestors that I can find with a quick look , but there are quite few marriages on the ancestryIreland  (UHF)site  that I can see Jane simpsons marrying and Thomas Mcauleys  marrying in the same years.
Whether a Jane Simpson married a Thomas Mcauley is on there I do not know - it's difficult narrowing it down with their free search-  The only way to tell  if they are on there for sure is if you buy credits for one of the given names- either Thomas's or Jane's name and view those entries that you buy- It costs 6 pounds for 5 views of your name that you buy.

Another option to find the marriage in the civil indexes - if it is registered, is to pay Family Ulster for a look up in the indexes ( costs one pound a year on a name), but tell them about the two ways of  the spelling of his name

Hope that is of some help
Kind regards :)

P.S These are the sites mentioned in this thread ,just in case you don't know about them:

Emerald ancestors for some civil index entries  http://emeraldancestors.com/
ancestryireland (The Ulster Historical foundation) http://www.ancestryireland.com/index.php
Family Ulster http://familyulster.com/

Hi Cell,

Good findings!

I can confirm your findings on UHF--they are very likely to be Simon's.

Never thought about the w in the surname--clearly, transcribers write what they read on the birth entries.

Sadly, I could not find the marriage registrations on the couple but there are possible marriages on UHF--I cannot be certain if they are them. This is further confirmed by Cell herself.

The only way is to find out which church the children may have baptised in. Then look for any possible marriage there.

Simon--the Rootschatters are wonderful lot--they are so helpful!! ;D

Kind regards,

Tees
