BURNFOOT - Please where is it?
« on: Tuesday 26 December 06 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone be kind enough to tell me the location of Burnfoot?

My ancestor was married in New Galloway and was residing in Burnfoot at that time in 1863.

Any help appreciated.

Thankyou so much Hume 24.

I had found some sites with maps but not your particular one which shows the place so clearly.

Thankyou again,   Annette

Dear hume24.

Thankyou for the map info but after 1/2hour I am still not sure which large town Burnfoot would have been closest to.

I really do need to put a mark on my Dumphries map.

Annette,
There was also a Burnfoot in the Parish of Ewes.  What was the surname of your relative?  As far as near towns are concerned this one has Hawick to the north and Langholm to the south.

Dear Reiver,

Thankyou for your reply.   I will study the maps again today.

My ancestor's name was Farquhar SINCLAIR.  He was born in Tiree but lived most of his life in Kirkcudbrightshire.

Thankyou again,  Annette

Hi Annette
I don't think Burnfoot, Ewes is yours.  I have had a look at the 1841 and 1851 Census and there is no Sinclair (surname) there.  I am reasonably familiar with the area and Sincalir does not ring a bell.  There appears to be one Sinclair buried at Ewes / Unthank and no Farquar there.  I think Burnfoot. Ewes was a Scott abode.

Never say never :) but hume's Burnfoot may be a better bet.

Regards
Reiver

Hi Reiver,

Thankyou again for your interest.

Farquhar Sinclair was an Agricultural Labourer and worked on many farms.
Those being, Barstilby Farm in 1841 census, in Midkelton in 1851 census ,  Drumglass farm at Balmaghie in 1861 census and Rascarel in 1871 census.

He certainly had to go where there was any work to be had.

I suppose I really need not know the position of Burnfoot but I was fascinated by the name and wanted to mark the area.

I see that the Kells Parish Church in New Galloway - A Church of Scotland was built long before 1863 and may have been the one he married in.

I spent yesterday sticking many maps together to try and get an overall picture of the area. I will keep looking.

Thanks again,    Annette
