SA lookup please - various names - nee BIRD

Hi everyone

I wonder if anyone has access to records (or can point me in the right direction) to find what happened to my gt grandmother's relatives, please?

The story goes that Esther BIRDs sisters (plural - although which ones is unknown) went to live in Adelaide.  They were born 1854 - 1875 in Bedminster, Somerset and where possible I have included known marriages:

Sarah J BIRD = Joseph GAY
Elizabeth BIRD = Alonzo BURT
Catherine BIRD
Mary A BIRD
Sophia BIRD
Ada Louisa BIRD = William PHILLIPS, who died & later (1909)
? James Abijah ANDREW or David John STEPHENS

Another relative went to Australia in the 1930s and reputedly stayed with these sisters, or their families.

Their parents were John BIRD and Catherine (or Caroline) CHARLEY.

I have some UK census info on them, although I lose some of them in later censuses, mainly because I have not invested in marriage certs yet!

I would be grateful for any pointers from the Australian end of things that might help me.

Marriages in the South Australian index with father as John Bird, using forenames you have quoted.

Sarah Bird m William Pridham - 19 Mar 1874
Elizabeth Bird, aged 18, m Henry Willshire - 6 Jun 1874
Mary Ann Bird, age 23,  m Walter Goodvinn -  22 Oct 1881
Elizabeth Emma Bird, aged 27, m Hilton HARRISON - 7 Oct 1882
Elizabeth Bird, aged 24, m Edward Alfred DINHAM - 24 Sep 1884

I saw no record in the birth indexes of the married couples you quoted as having children together in South Australia.

I haven't looked in the death index - the SA ones do not show parents names, but the relative who registered the death.

I decided to check the death cd after all - just in case

There are no deaths for any of the husbands quoted.

The Sarah who married in 1874, (age not recorded) died the next year aged 19 years.  Her husband William Pridham was the relative recorded.

Elizabeth WILLSHIRE also died young - 1876, aged 21, husband Henry informant

A death of an Elizabeth BURT in 1871, aged 38, shows her husband to be George. Wrong time frame.

So, no positive sightings at all just using the bdm indexes.

Many thanks for looking.

I think I am going to have to try harder to find these ladies in Wales before 1900, as I suspect they didn't emigrate until about then.

I am also wondering if the story is not about the children of one of them: Ada Louisa had at least 4 daughters herself, including May, Maud, Florence & Emily - all with the surname PHILLIPS (possible exception Emily).  Again, this is from BMDs and I do not have the certs. They were all born in Wales.

Are SA records available as late as 1900+ ?

I wonder if electoral registers or the like would be more helpful?  The links I can find all seem to quote fiche numbers rather than enabling me to search online...

The records   that I  searched in South Australia.
births to 1906
deaths to 1915
marriages to 1916
some later records are available on fiche.  I do not have access to them (I am in Victoria)
As far as I know, electoral rolls are not online.

Arranroots, I checked my South Australian Marriages  1917 - 1937 disk and there were no Bird girls with father John listed on that either........dee

No births to your Bird women in the disk for South Australian Births 1907 - 1928 either.......dee

It doesnt help that I am not entirely sure of their married names, but as I say I suspect they all married before emigrating.  And if it was the next generation ?PHILLIPS that emigrated, I am barking up the wrong gum tree entirely!
