If the school still exists; how about writing to the school office?  They might not still have records but they should know where they are kept.

Good luck,

Nanny Jan

Hello Frances. Many Many Thanks for the information. With the information you have given me you have already sorted  out an enigma for me. Sometime back I was sent from Canada,  a number of unidentified carte photos ,of  female Wilson's.

There was one taken at Yeovil  Somerset around 1886, which I could not  work out. However it now makes sense as Amelia takes the post of Headmistress at South Petherton;  which is only a few miles away from Yeovil and the dates  correspond .

Were there any documentation for teachers assistants ?,as her niece Sadie Agnes Lait worked with her at Upper Basildon from around 1901.

I am trying to put skin on bones and build up a picture of what type of person she was. How can  I  find out  about her teaching record?

Many thanks once again Frances ,You have been a gem

                               Ken

Hello Frances. Once again you have answered another enigma for me.  Until now, I couldn't work out why Sadie was living at Clapham 1918 prior to her marriage to Albert Lait. I thought she was still living with Amelia at Upper Basildon School.  Obviously she left Upper Basildon prior to 1905  to attend the Teachers Training College at Hereford.

Is the address 144 Lyndhurst Road, Worthing. Sussex  that of Amelia Wilson or the Teachers Registration Council? If it is Amelia's address then another enigma has been answered because she must have retired to Worthing.

I was not sure when Amelia retired until I received your reply. I was informed by the local historian of the village that according to Kelly's directories she was still the Headmistress in1925, but was not listed in 1928. After 1925 I lost her but she resurfaced  in 1938 living with Sadie and her husband Bert Lait at Capillano Farm, Woodcote, Oxon.

During Amelia's  time at Upper Basildon, would there have been any school inspections? I am trying to find out anything about her working life in order to have an insight into what she was like  as a person.

Many Many Thanks once again Frances.

Regards Ken

School Inspections would be done by HMI Inspectors and as such like all government records where kept, are held by The National Archives. If you look on their website at the research guides you will see detailed information on education records.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp

There is also a research guide on teacher training records.

If you are researching these records however it will unfortunately require a visit to TNA at Kew. School log books where they have survived will be held by the county record office who may hold other records on the school so it is worth enquiring of them about the school. The local studies section of the local library may also hold information and between the two repositories you may even find photographs of the school.

Regards

Valda

Hi Ken,

I have just rechecked the details on Sadie. On the standard page there is "Professional Address", the professional has been crossed through leaving just the word address. I think she was certainly living at Miss Wilson's private address.

I am pleased that these two entries solved some puzzles for you, when typing the entry you never think it will  mean this much :)
