Hi Joe,
Good evening, the weather in Sydney Australia is rain, lots of rain and we sure need it.
How is the Sottish weather?
You were very helpful with info on a recent post.
Can you assist me again. ; D
I have now got a clear copy of the Lloyd's Captain Register 1869 and have included in this post-
Campbell John. Perthshire, 1826.
C 88690, Dundee, 1854
Ship - Mary Waugh, 1854 - 6, to Aust.
ship - Moulin, 1,170, 1856-61, to West & East Indies.
ship - Bellona, 24140, 1861 to West Indies.
ship - Bellona, 24140, 1861-62, West Indies.
ship - Bon Accord, 43,123, 1863-6, to East Indies.
ship - The Duke, 15028, 1866-67, to West Indies; lost Jan 1867
I emailed the National Maritime Museum and they have a copy of a Masters Certificate, in his name, place and year of birth but the issue date is 1868. I am a bit reluctant to purchase it at this time as it would cost about $80 to $100. I have in the past ordered certs only to find they are the wrong ones, this happens to everyone. I have also located a cert with the same number but a different name.
Joe, do you know of anyone that goes to the National Maritime Museum that could look up the copy and verify the ships listed, if they are. I know this is a very big ask but I have emailled the museum of several occasions seeking further info, to make sure the cert is mine, and they have given me a research's website and a site with research guidance. If this is too big an ask or breaches copyright, let me know. It really is the only sure link that I have to my Scottish ancestors.
You mentioned that you have the 1851 census, could you look up and see if he is mentioned in Dundee. He would be aged 25 and he may have been in a training area or a training ship.
I have googled searched for a Historical Society at Dundee, as there was a lot of ship building and mariners, and not knowing the area am unsure if there is one which specialises with Master Mariners. Can you help me there?
I mentioned before that I could not find his birth/baptism on Scottishpeople site. Could that be he was not registered or was there a time limitation on registration. I know in England post 1837 that you had approx 6 weeks to register a birth and after that they could not be registered. I read that on an English post many years ago.
Sorry to be so long, I am piecing together the relos in England and want to do the same with the Scots.
As always, kindness regards and thanks for at least taking the time to read my posts.
