David CAMERON - Canadian Expeditionary Force
« on: Monday 01 January 07 11:11 GMT (UK) »
Stand by your beds!!  :D

Thanks to a link posted on Rootschat I found the grave of a near rellie in Niagara.  The grave marker states:

David A CAMERON
Major
98 Battn C E F
13 June 1959 aged 77

I believe this to be David Alexander Roderick CAMERON, dob 12 March (?May) 1882 in St Catherine?, Ontario son of Roderick and Isabella CAMERON.

I managed to download his attestation papers which give his next of kin as his wife (Mabel DURDAN) and his address 107 Huron St, Niagara Falls, Ontario.  He also states that he had previously served with the Lincoln & Welland Regt, 7 years.  The date of the attestation might be November 1915, but is not very clear. His occupation is "merchant".

Is there anything further to be discovered about David's military career?  I do not want to send for his entire military history, as he is not a direct ancestor, but I am curious to know what can be discovered.  I know very little about the CEF, so will Google for that.

Many thanks for reading!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots !

If you ever get any spare time .............  :D :D :D .............. here's a list of places to look !!  ;) I'll will keep looking though ............  :) I got this from the Forum !!

Here is a sample of about 350 Great War websites from the CEF Study Group which should start you on your search !!

Library and Archives Canada - Military HistoryThe fundamental URL for most CEF researchers. This site contains a wide range of basic links and represents a "starting point" for many people just beginning research on the CEF in the Great War.
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/war-military/index-e.html

Library and Archives Canada - Soldiers of the First World War (1914-1918)Over 600,000 Canadians enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War (1914-1918). The CEF database is an index to those personnel files, which are held by the National Archives. To date, over 800,000 images of Attestation papers have been scanned and are being made available on-line.

Library and Archives Canada - War Diaries of the First World War This database contains the digitized War Diaries of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) units. From the start of the First World War, CEF units were required to maintain a daily account of their “Actions in the Field.” This log was called a War Diary. The War Diaries are not personal diaries, rather they are a historical record of a unit’s administration, operations and activities during the First World War.

Official History of the Canadian Army in the First World War - Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919, Colonel G. W. L. Nicholson, C.D., Army Historical SectionThis is the classic reference text [the Bible] for any student of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the Great War. The original text is very difficult to obtain, however, the document is now available in .pdf format directly from the historical section of the Canadian Armed Forces website. [Note: The pagination in the online document is different than the original document - therefore citations with page number references cannot be used.]

The Canadian War MuseumThe Canadian War Museum (CWM) is an affiliated museum of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The Canadian War Museum, the national military history museum is also a centre for research and the dissemination of information and expertise on all aspects of the country's military past from the pre-contact era to the present. The new museum opened in May 2005.

Hi Karen

No, I didn't have the marriage, although I had guessed Mabel's mother's maiden name from the burials in Niagara.  This confirms it - thank you very much!

Arranroots,

As luck would have it, I live in the NIagara Region, in St. Catharines. I will do some checking around for you this week and see what I can come up with.
As for the Linciln and Welland Regimental Musuen, it is closed until July 2007.
Check this out! It is his attestation paper. It shows his signature with rank of Captain. http://data2.archives.ca/cef/ren1/006484a.gif

Hi Mike!

That is a stroke of luck.  :D

I have various other names from the CAMERON branch that went to Niagara and Annie and I have had fun finding records of David's father Roderick's "flora of Niagara".

I do not know much at all about researching military records, but I did find a CAMERON relative who died at Gallipoli, so I wondered whether the two cousins ever met during WWI.

If it amuses you to have a look for David, I would be very grateful.  If you need further details, please ask.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
