The AVRI has quite a number of children born to this couple in Tasmania - Ann is variously registered as

Ann Unknown  Ann Nowlan Ann Nolan Ann Newland

Do you have the details of the children?

The Tas archives probably has many of the details as well
http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/

Were either of them convicts?

There are one male and two female convicts that could be yours.

John WINDSOR arr. 20/4/1829 per Georgiana out of Plymouth.
Anne NOWLAN arr. 2/7/1844 per Greenlaw out of Dublin
Mary Ann Nowlan arr. 24/4/1840 per Gilbert Henderson out of London.

The following record seems to make sense.

WINDSOR, JOHN
Gender:    Male
Birth    1812 -
Marriage/Relationship:    1844 - LAUNCESTON,Tasmania  (  NOWLAN, ANN  )
Death:

Just had a look at 'Permissions to Marry' and find that Anne Nowlan per Greenlaw asked for PtM a James Pickett in 1848.  And Mary Ann per Gilbert Henderson asked for PtM a John Cox in 1841.  With no mention at all of John Windsor.  The databases are not all conclusive but I think it may be back to the drawing board.  How do the kids stack up in my previous post?

Hi Dexter

The Colonial Data base at the Tas archives, goes through to 1900 - so you may also be able to find marriages and children for the children of John and Ann.

A quick look shows some more links - so I will leave you to the pleasure of checking them all.

John could well have been free (if he arrived in 1829) by the time he married and if Ann was not  a convict, no permission would have been needed.

The actual dates for the children's births are
Elizabeth Ann 23 Dec 1845 mother Ann Nowlan
Emily 26 July 1849 mother Ann U
James Thomas 30 Sep 1859 mother Ann Nolan
John 3 Aug 1847 mother Ann Nowlan
Laurence 16 Jan 1858 mother Ann Nolan
Mary Teresa 24 Jul 1861 mother Ann Newland
Richard Daniel 26 Oct 1855 mother Ann Nolan
Sarah Jane 25 Jul 1851 mother Ann Nowlan
William 2 Oct 1853 - mother here is given as Ann Taylor?? - the archives may have grouped him here because there was no other suitable parents

For a fee you can get copies of the registry entries and the convict information from the archives - or you can visit, of course and check it all yourself  :)  :)

Trish

These  are birth dates - not baptisms - civil registration was earlier in Tasmania than the other states  -  1 Dec 1838. Don't buy certificates for this time - the film print from the archives is a copy of all that is available.

Hi Trish,   Thank you once again for that extra  information. It has filled in quite a few gaps.
