Death Certificate Information
« on: Thursday 04 January 07 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Would the place of birth, such as someone born in France (British Subject) be on the death certificate?

I have an ancestor who may have ended up living in a workhouse in Mile End London in the 1861 census (George Morgan b. 1791, France (British Subject)).

I don't really know if that is him, but on his daughters marriage certificate in 1863 he is deceased or reading between the lines, he may have left the family.
It is possible he died any time between 1851 and sometime in the 1860's or later. But don't know if it was Leicester, Birmingham or indeed London.

So if his death certificate said France for birthplace that might confirm to me it is him or not. Shame about the common name, he should have kept his original surname, it would have been easier. I'm trying to reduce the risk of buying the wrong certificates.

I'm afraid all you'll have is,his age, where and how he died, and the name of the informant.

Hi William,
Thanks for your reply. If it is as I fear and he did end up in London without his family, even if I get his death certificate, the name of the informant will not help me confirm it is him.

I will have to concentrate on the rest of his family and hope in the future I uncover more information as I go or win the Lottery and splash out on lots of certificates and visits to the record office.

Many thanks
Pipkim  :)

I fully agree with wrjones. I have never seen an "old" death cert with a place of birth.

The death cert (if in England and Wales) should show the occupation of the deceased, but this ay be last known occupation - see Barbara Dixon's Death Cert tutorial here - http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm

I agree it is unlikely to show place of birth.

Of course, if he had died in Scotland, then you would expect place of birth.

Really  :o - none  of the Scottish death certificates that I have viewed have that information on them and there are over 50 of those.  :(  What have I missed?

Many thanks everyone for your help. I think I will try and find bits of other info to pin George Morgan down before I waste too much money on him, I don't think he wants to be found.

It's a shame they didn't decided to give more information on the early certificates.

Thanks Julian, I shall book mark the link.

Different question, same man, do workhouse records still survive?
Perhaps I should chase up the workhouse records belonging to the workhouse he may have been in, in the 1861 census.

I wish there was more information on the early English Death certificates too. I have been lucky in that my great grandfather's South Australian Death certificate did indeed give his place of birth and told me how long he had been in South Australia.

My gg-grandfather's Victorian Death certificate gave me lots more. It not only gave me his place of birth, but it also gave me the names of both his wives, where he married them, how old he was at the time, and the names of the children of both marriages and whether they were still living, plus the ages of the living ones. I was amazed that it had so much information on it........dee
Steeles, Burton, Garrod (Norfolk), Clarke, Tomblin (Rutland)
Bauer (London, France), Blades, Parker (Surrey)
Edwards, Coles, Smith, Nunley, Craddock, York, & Linnell (Northants) )
Ehmcke, Deimel, Appelkamp (Germany)
Watts (Somerset, Wiltshire) Selway, Churchill, & Chappell (Somerset)
Redwood (Devon, Essex) Button, Archer, Leach (Cambridgeshire)
