Smith/Family History Online

I can't seem to get Family History Online to search for a marriage for John Smith. I'd entered a specific county and a very limited timescale, so it's not as if I was asking it to search the whole of the database.

When I try, it just tells me that Smith is too common a name to search!! So, I'm taking that to mean that no Smiths can be searched for!! Can this be right? Is there a way round it?

Hi Jill
If you limit it to one set of records (eg marriages) , it seems to cope- even without a first name and over a 10 year period. Well at least it did for Derbyshire.

I did only ask for marriages!

I've just tried it again and it worked okay - although the search didn't come up with anything useful!

Funnily enough, it seems to be when you tick the 'variation' box for Smith that the search can't cope.

Glad it worked in the end but a shame nothing useful came up
