Smith/Family History Online
« on: Monday 08 January 07 18:35 GMT (UK) »
I can't seem to get Family History Online to search for a marriage for John Smith. I'd entered a specific county and a very limited timescale, so it's not as if I was asking it to search the whole of the database.

When I try, it just tells me that Smith is too common a name to search!! So, I'm taking that to mean that no Smiths can be searched for!! Can this be right? Is there a way round it?  ???

Hi Jill
If you limit it to one set of records (eg marriages) , it seems to cope- even without a first name and over a 10 year period. Well at least it did for Derbyshire.

I did only ask for marriages!

I've just tried it again and it worked okay - although the search didn't come up with anything useful!

Funnily enough, it seems to be when you tick the 'variation' box for Smith that the search can't cope.
