From the Beret's I would say a Scots Regt, but would need to see a closer look at a cap badge.

Any chance of a scan of one of the badges?

hi,

er.. not possible i'm afraid, this is my friends photo, and her dad was in the picture, sadly he died last year, and she never did find out, because her dad never spoke of it, I can tell you though, he was born in liverpool in 1925, and grew up there, also married there, but died in york last year.

does this help??

Julie

on the back of the photo is this

PHOTO - SERVICE

Prop : A.L.LAFRANCONI
MOGADISHU
P.O.BOX No 400

her dad also wrote East Africa underneath all that.
C.THOMPSON  Pte No -231.  (would this be his service number??)

Hi Julie

Maybe you friend might like to try to obtain his service record. This explains how. If their mother is still alive it could be free of charge, if not it'll cost £30.

http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/service_records/service_records.html

Never the less it's the right question to ask here as the more info you can give the MOD the better, although they will try to find it by name and DofB.

ahhh wendi...

she was under the impression that she needed his reg't to obtain these, would you say then that the 231 IS his service no??? the reason I ask, is my gt gt granddad, he had a 3 digit service number as well, but didnt know if it was 'commonplace' to have just 3 digits?

really dont know much about Mil at all

thanks

Julie

No, sadly her mum has already passed away

if you supply them with his full name, date of birth etc ( as much as you can) they can be very helpful

231 isn't his service number, it's probably part of it, you are looking for a seven figure number at this time

That's exactly what I was going to say harribobs  ;D

It's just the last 3 digits of his service number, his number in World War 2 would probably have been 7 digit.

Julie, my guess is your Gt gt Grandad was from a different era  ???

Your friend will have to be patient for his records, without the regiments name, but they have relaxed the rules recently and it will be possible for them to obtain his service record with just with name and date of birth, but obviously it will take longer than if they were known.

You never know it's early days, perhaps one of the specials will see your post and ID the Regiment for yo

Salty's right it's Scots, but that does not mean to say he is in any way associated with Scotland, it's just a matter of to which Regiment men were required  ;D
