Aircraft crash photos? - board of inquiry
« on: Wednesday 10 January 07 01:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello Everyone,

I've been researching the Canadian crew members of Wellington Bomber BK 387 which crashed into a hillside on a training mission at 22.40 hrs on January 2nd 1944, with the loss of all her men.

The crew were training at Number 82 OTU (based at RAF Ossington in Nottinghamshire).
All the information I have found out so far is here:

http://www.oakworthvillage.com/tewittlane.html

My question is, would there have been any actual crash site photographs taken at the time (possibly for a board of inquiry) and if so, does anyone know where they might be now?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Cheers,
Andy Wade

Hi Andy,
My first port of call would be the Air Historical Branch (RAF).  They may be able to assist.

Hi Andy,

Trythe message baord at:

www.rafcommands.com

There are at least 2 reseachers that use that board who are Canadian, Hugh Halliday and Floyd Willston. Hugh lives in Ottawa and uses the archives there frequently and he may well be able to help you by accessing personnel records of crew members concerned. At the very least he or Floyd would be able to tell you if such a record might exist. The Canadian records are very detailed and Hugh has helped me out with queries from relatives of aircrew KIA or involved in training accidents. Hugh has contributed the database of awards to Canadian Air Force personnel and may well have information in his database pertaining to members of the crew involved.
Best of luck with your search,

Regards,

Ann

Hi Andy

just a small and, to add to the wealth of info already provided.

Don't overlook the local newspaper, often there are shots of yokels standing around the debris in the farmers field.

That's a good point, I'll try the archives in the local Library.
Many thanks,
Andy.

It might even be worth asking at the farm- we've got pics of a crashed Hurricane on the farm from 1940. Often these incidents became part of the local folklore.
On a slightly different tack, I've been going through my Great Uncle's Bomb Disposal photos, and there are loads of shots of crashed Allied Aircraft. The RAF BD Organization had to clear up any munitions, bullets, flares, etc found in the wreckage of crashed aircraft of both sides, and seem to have taken plenty of pics. If the records still exist at the PRO,they might be worth a look.

Andy

Being lazy and ignorant, do you know where this hillside was?
