KITCHEN Myton on Swale
« on: Thursday 11 January 07 18:57 GMT (UK) »
At Myton on Swale 1 March 1845
William KITCHEN aged 23 married Mary APPLEBY aged 19.  His father was Edward KITCHEN Carrier and hers was Samuel APPLEBY Farmer.   Charles WETHERILL and Mary ROBERTS were Witnesses.

They went on to have the following children Edward, 1846 Thomas 1847, Charles 1849, George 1850, Ann 1854, Benjamin 1855, Elizabeth 1860, Mary 1863, Emma 1865, Anthony 1871 bn Myton.  There might be more!

My paternal grandfather - might be, Anthony KITCHEN who married Emma STYAN bn Whixley in Enfield in 1892 and had my father Charles KITCHEN, 2 January 1902 in Gateshead.

There is no sign of this couple with children,  Lilian, 1894, bn Edmonton Emma 1897, Douglas 1895 and Alfred 1899 bn Haltwhistle on the 1901 Census.  A lot of very generous people have tried to find them for me.

I have Mary APPLEBY now KITCHEN at Myton in 1851, would it be  possible to find her on the 1841 Census, as I have been unable to find her father Samuel APPLEBY anywhere?  I have 1851 microfiche for Greenhammerton - no sign of Samuel!

This is very kind of you thank you very much for your help.  I have spent 2 afternoons at the York Family History Society's Research Room searching the microfiche for 1851.  I have also looked at Myton on Swale Registers for KITCHEN at Northalleton, and have found most of the KITCHENs.

I have none of them from the 1841 Census.  There seem to be 3 brothers James 1809, Robert 1820 and William. 1824

I wondered if Mary APPLEBY might be connected to the ones you have discovered.  I did find burials on York FHS website in Easingwold, of SAMSON APPLEBY wife Isabella.

The copy of the marriage cert is written SAM'L I thought it looked like an L!!

Thank you again for this help

Hi Noreen,

1841 HO107/1241/5 fol.6 p.7  Myton upon Swale (Easingwold district)
Edward Kitchen 55 Agr. Lab      Y
Jane         "        55                    Y
Richard     "        25 Agr. Lab      Y

same ref. fol.5 p.5  In household of farmer Thomas Anderson
William Kitchen 20 M.S.             Y

I wondered if the Applebys I found were Samuel's, as you couldn't find him in 1851 he might have died even before 1841.  I know the date of birth is a bit out for Mary Appleby (20) if she was married 1845 age 19, and they usually get rounded down in 1841 census.

Anyway, hope it helps a bit. I do have 1841 census cds Yorkshire, so if there's another parish you'd like checking, just ask, it's sometimes a lot better (if the parish isn't too big) than using the sometimes incorrect indexes

Barbara

This 1841 census is very helpful, it fits with my research,

KITCHEN
James KITCHEN bn 1755 of Alne  marr Sussanah HERRING chr Gt Ouseburn 1761
At Myton on Swale 12 February 1781 Witnesses Richard FOSTER, Barth PLACE

Children:
Edward Ch 1783 Robert 1786 Mary Bn 1788 James 1788 Richard 1789

Edward KITCHEN Marr Jane DOSON ?DAWSON, 7 November 1808 Myton on Swale
Witnesses John HUDSON, Henry TAYLOR (Clerk) Will BALEY

Children
James Ch 11 Jan 1810, Richard 16 Oct 1811, Susannah abt 1816 (died 1818) Robert abt 1818 William abt 1820, John abt 1822 (died) Thomas abt 1824 ?(died 1829).

I have put 'abt', because they are on the 1851 Census or the burials for Myton.
My father's father Anthony KITCHEN and wife Emma STYAN, are nowhere to be found on the 1901 Census!

Her mother Sarah STYAN is in Whixley with grand daughter Florence who was born to Emma before she married Anthony KITCHEN.  I had all YORKSGEN and people on other genealogy lists trying to find them for me without success.

Thank you again for this.
