Salford church 1905
« on: Monday 15 January 07 00:55 GMT (UK) »
Albert WAITE and Elizabeth PEEL were married in 1905 in the Parish Church in the Parish of St. Clement, Salford.

Please can anybody tell me what the church is called now?

Thank you
June

Hi June,
according to the list on the Diocese of Manchester website there are two current St Clements in Salford

Saint Clement with Saint Matthias
Broughton Lane
Lower Boughton
Salford
M7 1UF

and
Saint Clement, Ordsall and Salford Quays
Hulton Street
Ordsall
Salford
M5 3WQ

Coincidentally I have a 1905 marriage certificate which says "Marriage solemnized at Parish Church, Parish of St Clement Broughton in the County of Salford"  the clergyman was Thomas Lancaster.

Hi:  Perhaps I should have said that the incumbent on September 27th, 1905 was Daniel Kerrin/Kerron.  Will that help narrow the church down?

mshrmh:

By the way, how did you decide which church your marriage was solemnized in: Higher Broughton, St. James, Lower Broughton, St. Clement or Lower Broughton, The Ascension?
Obviously, I have been to the Diocese of Manchester website that you mentioned!

Perhaps knowing this, it will help me to make a decision.  J.

If your people lived in the Broughton area of Salford, then "the parish church in the parish of St Clement" would have been St Clement's in Broughton Lane.
Byers (Salford & London)
Stringfellow (Salford & Chorley)
Holmes (Manchester & Birmingham)
Goulding/Golden (Birmingham & Lincolnshire)
Bassett (Manchester & Salford, Staffordshire)
Child (Lincolnshire)
Belshaw (Salford)
Hallsworth (Eccles & Salford)
Vernon (Bury & Chapel en le Frith)

skb:  Thank you for your response.

I have absolutely no idea which area of Salford they were living in at the time of their marriage.  All I have is their address:  1 Stone Street.

which leads me to more research, i.e., where is Stone Street and where is the Broughton district?

Hi june - I've checked with LancashireBMD - "your marriage" shows as Salford St Clements, "mine" as Broughton St Clements", which suggests they were not at the same church, therefore "yours" is probably the one in the Ordsall district.

I've tried looking at current maps for Stone Street and the only one near the area of Ordsall is actually on the Manchester side of the River Irwell, not the Salford side, so although near it may not be the correct one. I suspect that your Stone Street has been demolished, like many others in redevelopment of the 1960s & 1970s.

I think mshrmh is correct. I've found Stone St on the 1891 census index and it appears to be somewhere around here:

which is quite close to Hulton St, location of St Clement's Ordsall

Broughton is a couple of miles north of this area

Sorry, I am not at all familiar with Lancashire (I live in Canada), but, reading  mshrmh last post, it would seem that at one time Manchester and Salford were separated by a river.  Note to self:  Must get decent map of Manchester.

BTW you mention Lancashire BMDs, do you have a CD or are they available online?  As I have just started on the Lancashire line, these would be invaluable to me.

skb:  Thank you for consulting the 1891 census index and for the links.  I shall get directions, via mapquest, from one church to the other to fix this in my mind.

You have both been wonderful.  Thank you so much.  June
