IGI Entry
« on: Tuesday 16 January 07 00:25 GMT (UK) »
I have found an entry on the IGI - listing the Christening date of 1757 Uttoxeter, Stafford, England - it also gives  the date of death as 1772.  I'm wondering how reliable this information is.
My reason for asking is because I have found another researcher who has listed this Joseph Bull on Websites (GR & Rootsweb - Tribal Pages).  She says he married and had a number of children. But the entry has him dying at age 15 years.  As this person has not responded to any of my inquires, I can't ask how she came to this conclusion.
Should  I disregard her research and believe the entry on the IGI as the correct one?.
Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hi Sarra,
If the IGI entry states it is a "Submitted" record, rather than an "Extracted" one, then its reliability is suspect!
Submitted records are ones taken from Church of LDS members and other family history resources, and not from the original documents themselves.  We all know how dodgy research can be, so if you are certain that this is the fellow you are looking for (do parents' names match etc.) then I would discount the IGI information and either look for, or ask someone to lookup, the original parish registers for the right information.
Hope that helps  :)

Additional info:

I now see that the IGI entry is indeed an extracted one...which is strange.  The only thing I can think of is that the death date is incorrect, or you have the wrong Joseph BULL.  :-\

Somone else may have a better idea - I'm starting to sound like I don't have a clue!

Hi

There is a burial of a Joseph Bull, 29 August 1772, St Mary, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.  Unfortunately no age is given.

I'm not sure what information is given in parish records but it may be an idea to post on the Staffordshire board asking if someone could check the parish records for this entry.

I would have more faith in an extracted IGI record than a website where the owner does not reply. I found a website where one of my ancestors was listed as marrying his niece (who would have been 9-10 years old at the time). Utter nonsense. Some folks simply find a possible ancestor and claim him/her.

Sheila's suggestion to check the parish register is good - if you live anywhere near an LDS centre you can order their film & search that yourself. It is unusual for the IGI to include death entries - so I would think the parent names may well be on the death/burial record in the register.

I agree with  Trish and stand by my previous comment about dodgy research!  There is alot of it about, as you have just found - obviously the Joseph Bull on that person's website has been misidentified as the one shown on the IGI.  They have just discounted the death that's also (unusually, but fortuitously in this case!) recorded there.
If you go to the Staffordshire board, with as much info as possible about what you are looking for, I'm sure you will get plenty of help looking for the "real" Joseph Bull.
Cheers

Hi Sarra -

I would agree with Trish that the research is probably suspect.  Best of luck with your research and I am sure someone on Rootschat will be able to assist you more than I.

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions and help.
This person who has listed her research on Joseph Bull - says she welcomes Additions, Corrections etc. But she will never reply to an email. I'm not the only one apparently - another gentleman who lives in england has contacted me through GR. We are third cousins and this person would be his fifth cousin - she has ignored him too.
I put a Add Post-em on this entry for Joseph Bull on her Rootsweb site .  Perhaps if we do this to all the entries we can prove to  be wrong - maybe ???.
I believe she lives somewhere in England. She has done a lot of research going back to the 1500's. But she has some flawed  research she has posted.
This Joseph Bull would fit into my Tree quite well - if he hadn't died at age 15 years. I thought it was strange to have the christening entry and death entry together.  I did find Joseph Bull (1772) on the Staffordshire Burial Index - Family History On line - the entry does say parish of Uttoxeter. That's the Parish where he was christened in 1757.
I'll post a question on the Staffordshire board, see if they can help work it all out.
Thanks
Sarra.

It's very annoying when people who have posted extensive trees etc don't reply to email.
However, do keep in mind that she may have had so much spam that she had to change her email, or she may have died (a lot of researchers are retired, and do it for many years.)
I have one person who doesn't respond, and I know she's alive, because she has responded to other "new" family members whom I have found.  I have concluded that she must have been offended when I asked her to back up some of her info.  I was polite, but I did need to know.  Since then I have discovered that a large part of her tree was correct, but some key elements were not, by doing the work myself.  I am grateful for what she did provide when she did, however - in the end it gave me one critically important contact, a cousin, and from her I have been able to go on and do a lot more, and she has given me personal recollections that are very significant, things I would never have gotten from anywhere else.  Also, I would never in a million years have found this cousin myself, due to her having emigrated at an unlikely age (65!) to another continent!  She was 84 when I found her, so I couldn't wait for ancestry to find her on some passenger list!
