Hi Cyndy,

There's still a pub in Pwll-du. It's marked with a blue "Beer Mug" sign on the current Ornance Survey Explorer map (OL13) for the Brecon Beacons National Park at Ref: SO247115.

Whether or not it's still the Forge Hammer Inn I don't know. If it is it probably caters for a much different sort of customer these days. There's a cave marked nearby, so it's probably mainly for cavers, walkers and riders. Maybe there's a Guide to pubs of the Brecon Beacons National Park which might have it in.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for both messages received on my return from holiday.
Pwll-du sounds an interesting place.
My interest comes from finding that in the 1871 Wales Census these members of my family were residing at the Forge Hammer Inn Pwll-du.

William Penn 46[ previously listed as a painter and glazier]
mary Penn 45
Richard H Penn 8
Mary J Penn 14
John C Penn 16
and
Mary morgan31
Sarah Rundill 84

If any one has any other info. to share please get in touch.
Thanks, Cyndy

I'm afraid the Forge Hammer Inn in Gilwern is not the same one as the one that used to be in Pwll-du.
The Gilwern one is still going, or at least it was last time I went to Brynmawr which was last autumn. It's still called by that name. It was shut for a while but had obviously re-opened then.
It's between Gilwern and Clydach; on the right hand side of the A465 going west. You can't miss it if you go that way.
