Barrowden Baptisms - COLEMAN c 1836
« on: Thursday 18 January 07 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Barrowden Baptisms, would anyone be able to help with the Baptism/Birth of a James Coleman c1838-9 and also his parents names if poss.  Have found him on the census for 1841 (aged 3) alongwith I think his mother Sarah (aged 40).  But unable to trace parents full names and birth place.

He later moved to Gretton in Northamptonshire when he was older and with his own family, and I have these later details.
Thanks

In 1851, I think that I've found him and his mother lodging in Barrowden with Mary  Dresser and her family. Sarah is listed as 49, and I think unmarried, and James is 9. Both are listed as from Barrowden.

Thanks for this, appears I must do more searching, he is my gg grandad and I cannot go back any further.  Must investigate Sarah Coleman more.  I believe she had several children and if she was unmarried they must have taken her name.  Back to searching.

In 1881, as you say, James is in Gretton with his large family.
In 1871, in Barrowden there's

James Coleman Head 30 Ag Lab Barrowden
Sarah       "        Wife   29            Seaton
John         "        Son     8 Scholar        "
Josiah C.  "        Son     6      "        Barrowden
William     "        Son     4      "              "
James      "         Son    2       "            "
RG10/3306/49/15

and in 1861, James is a carter at John Balls' farm in Barrowden. He's listed as unmarried then.

There's a possible marriage with James Coleman and Sarah Cobley listed in 1st quarter 1862 Uppingham Vol 7a page 377. This might give you his father.

Good luck
Isobel

Just to say thanks for the info, I have sent off for the marriage certificate, perhaps that will bring more info.  Much appreciated.

Received the marriage certificate. They were married in Seaton Church and his father was William Coleman.  James was living in Laxton before marriage.  So I now go in search of William Coleman born about 1790, and try to find where he was born.  Seems there are a lot of Colemans in this area of Rutland.
