House and Land owner - what records are out there!
« on: Friday 19 January 07 10:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Just received a death cert this morning (actually 4 - all of which were brimming with info and they were the right ones - yippee!)  3xgt grandfather lists his profession as being a Proprietor of Houses and Land.  This was 1866 in Hayden Bridge Northumberland.  I wondered what records are available for me to find out more regarding his properties.

thank you

You need to consult the Register of Deeds which will be in the Record Office of the locality.  All property transactions are listed there.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hi Sallysmum
If he had houses and land it would be likely that he also left a will, which would give you (hopefully) lots more information as to "what" land and houses!
Newbie :)

Theres an 'Owners of Land 1873' list out there - presumably compiled from the 1871 census - dont think its online, but I have seen copies (by county) on EBay ....

Return of Owners of Land 1873
The Return of Owners of Land arose from the question put in the House of Lords on 19 February 1872 by the Earl of Derby to the Lord Privy Seal "whether it was the intention of Her Majesty's Government to take any steps for ascertaining the number of proprietors of land and houses in the United Kingdom, with the quantity of land owned by each proprietor?". It was prepared by the Local Government Board, and published in 1875 as The Return of Owners of Land, 1873. The Return shows the holding, in acres roods and square poles, and estimated yearly rental, of all holdings over 1 acre.

Hi

Don't forget Poll Books as they will list people with Land and the vote in the time period you want.

I have a copy of the Northumberland 1873 Return of Owners of Land.  Send me a PM with the names of the folk you are interested in and I will check for you.
