Dunn family in Clay Cross
« on: Sunday 21 January 07 01:17 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any relatives of the Dunn family who came to Clay Cross to work in the mines. My g-grandmother was Margaret Ann Dunn and her father was George'Gaffer'Dunn. Some of the family were killed in the explosion in Parkhouse Colliery. I am trying to find out about the brothers and sisters of Margaret and also George. Did some of them stay in Durham? Can anyone Help?

:)Hi! Thanks for replying! they are down in Clay Cross by the 1881 census and I think they are actually there by 1871 but I haven't got my records to hand at the moment. Ring any bells?

Hi Carol,
Not a link this time I'm afraid but I will keep trying. This site is great! I've been on quite a few where you post things but have had very few replies. So far I have had about 5 which isn't bad for one night's work. Thanks again and good luck with your research.

Yes that's right. I think there were 4 of them altogether from my g-grandfather's family. He was one of the managers but was ill at the time so his son was in charge when it happened. It is all quite well documented in local history books. He lost 3 sons and a nephew I believe- all off the top of my head without checking. That gives me a lead on some of the wives thanks. The family was quite large, 10 children altogether so I have a lot of work to do. I have traced 3 families so far, so only a few to go! Why did they have so many children? Evidently, no tele!
Thanks, Jane
