Can anyone tell me how to find the reference number of a birth to apply for a copy birth certificate please.

James Alexander Gemmell was born 21/07/1921, Paisley.

Strictly speaking the reference number is not necessary although this does entail some extra expense.
have a look at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/hlpsrch/leaflet2.html which is the GROS leaflet explaining the procedures and costs of applying for a certificate.
