Burial Look up Please
« on: Tuesday 23 January 07 10:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm trying to find a death on the NBI (or any info) for John AGGS - originally in Norfolk.

He had a son called William AGGS (born c. 1802 Norfolk) and on William's marriage cert. it says: Father John AGGS - deceased.

As William was one of the original "Peelers" in London, it is possible the whole family moved there but I really don't know.

I'm rather clutching at straws here

Thanks for any help or guidance

Regards
Di

PS - It is "reputed" that the family were Quakers

Hi Di,
Thought this may be of interest to you, came across it while looking for another person.
Old Bailey Proceedings (London): 18th Oct 1832:
John Pinniger Alias William Golding: charged with Animal Theft (1 Gelding).  Without going through the trial text, shall go direct to William.
William Aggs. "I am a Policeman. On the 26th of September 1832, I took the prisoner on another charge, at his House."-------
He was Found Guilty by the Jury. aged 40. to be Transported for LIFE.
If this is of interest to you, let me know! I have also noted a few Aggs in Norfolk around 1750-1806 but have not yet  compiled a list .

Hi Reg and Chairlady,

Thank you both so much for all the information.

Reg - Yes, that is one of a few trials showing my Great Great Grandfather's good work  ::) . Interestingly, the majority of my ancestors where the ones on trial (it's probably lucky that William wasn't the Policeman who arrested one of my other ancestors - bit of a conflict a few generations later  ;) )

Anyway, back to the Aggs family - I know that there was a Quaker family in Norfolk called Aggs who have been very thoroughly researched and documented. They are generally called the Hanbury-Aggs. It would be great to connect with that lot but I have been unable to find any connection.

If you have uncovered anything from the Norfolk/Norwich side, I'd be most grateful for any information - Thank you.

ChinaLady - Thank you so very much for sending all the NBI Aggs records. I didn't realise there would be quite so many  :-[. Sadly no John Aggs of the right period - but that doesn't mean that he wasn't using his second name or something else.  ::)

I will keep all these on file as, hopefully, I will be able to connect to at least one of them at some stage.

Thank you both - I appreciate your help  :-*

Di

Hi Reg,

No - I haven't done anything with them. I'll check what I have (very little) but don't recall her name.

I do have the Will of John Gurney AGGS from c. 1810 (died 1811) (Norfolk) but he appears to have died without marriage/issue (although I can't read all of the Will  :( )

Do you have any further details? They may have had a son called John which would put him about the right age for the guy I'm looking for  ??? - particularly as my William was "reputed" (on census) to have been born in Norwich.

Thanks

Di

Oh Reg - how I wish I could.  :(
(I dont even know her name AFTER marriage  ::) )

Unfortunately all I have is from William's marriage cert (to Ann Spurgin 16.10.1838) where it says his father's name was "John Aggs - deceased".

William was born c. 1802 according to the 1851 census. He died in 1857 so there are no later census I can use.

I feel like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack even though the name is unusual enough.

Thanks

Di
